Well, 2014 is around the corner and I'm headed out on New Year's Day bringing "Fishful Thinkin' " out of her long slumber....and I am going to start this thread up a few days early!

My New Year's Resolution is to fish with family more than 2013....which is a great way to kick off 2014!

Anyone else headed out early on New Years?

Thanks Wildthing....and to you too! If the winds are cooperative, I'll be fishing that spot you were last Feb. when you smacked those beauties! ;)

Watch out FM I'll be lurking around the next corner you turn like a bad dream haha!
See ya out there Bro

My two friends and I will be headed out hopefully this coming weekend, if we can get our new depth sounder wired up before then. We are in a 19 ft trophy centre console. Come say hi if you see us out there!

Haha;) That's ok...we'll be the only boats there anyways! Lol.

You won't be the only ones there, if I play my cards right...

Lol...ok...in that event...I'll just skulk off to another little spot about 4 miles away...lol.

A few fish are around....spotty...but if you're in the right spot you may get lucky. West Van, Tunstall, Gibsons area and a couple of other areas.

Took the boat out for the first time in a couple months and put in a couple hours, both Saturday and Sunday morning, off of West Van. Released two undersized (both about 20 inches) on Saturday and kept one barely legal spring and lost another better fish on Sunday. Found bait each day off of the Pink Apartment and to the west of it. Sunday was absolutely spectacular on the water.

Saltwater Report:

The fishing in the harbour has been pretty spotty over the holidays. There have been a few days with no action, a few days with some undersize, and a few days with some undersize and some keepers! What can I say, it is local winter chinook fishing. That being said, we have definitely noticed more "just" sub-legal fishing showing up this week. By this I mean fair numbers of 20-23 inch fish.

Combing through the journals of years past, I am confident some bigger fish are going to show up this week. For instance, this coming week last year, Eddie was into 6 keeper fish in one tide change. As usual, the best area has been the mouth of the Capilano on the flood tide and close to the bottom. On the ebb tide anglers have been fishing the QB, or out in the freighters, again, close to the bottom.

Productive spoons have been on the small side, like 3.0 Irish Cream, or Coho Killers in the Irish Cream and Yellow Tail colours. It looks like the rain is going to back off for the weekend and so is the wind, so take advantage of this break in the weather to get out there.

Note: Over the weekend we heard of some good fishing off the south end of Bowen Island with some legal winters put in the box.

Do you really mean the south end of Bowen ? There have been some nice catches ( to upper teens) lately on west side Bowen/and up the sound.....

Yup...some fish around in different locales for sure...find bait, fish around the bait, catch fish if they are around. I found one nice fish in a spot no one fishes for winters.

The usual haunts on the West side of Bowen, West Van, Howe Sound all produce fish when they are around, but don't discount other non-out of the norm areas....fish have fins and swim... :p

Welcome all and to all a wonderfull fishy 2014. Thanks for the "sticky" Mr. LastChance !

FM your point I think is Salmon can be hooked pretty much anywhere and this is of course true :) . Thats just one beauty of fish'n. That however doesn't have anything to do with why I asked UA about the locale of the reported good fishing.

My question is not about anyone getting a fish or two in a different area ....or not .....but about trying to clarify that the report "heard reports of good fishing" was in fact from fisher's dragging off South Bowen. 'South Bowen' usually sees less coverage this time of year but it also is occassionally used as a location when referring to around the corner [usually innocently but incorrectly], on the west "back side" and even sometimes the lower east side of Bowen.

UA thanks for your winter report .... been side tracked for a bit here so I will ask again: do you know if the reports you heard from last weekend could be confirmed as referring to good fishing on the South end of Bowen or could they have been possibly just also referring to the improved fishing lately on "back side" of Bowen area... etc...

cheers..
Greg

Saltwater Reports:

Todd Sweet: Last weekend was cold and clear with
almost no wind so it was perfect for winter fishing. I dropped off some
crab and prawn traps then headed to Tunstall Bay to catch the tail end
of the high slack. The ebb had just started so I figured I would give it
a couple passes. We dropped the gear in and within 5 minutes had a good
fish on the measured out at 25 inches.

It was on an irish creme spoon right on the bottom in 125 feet of
water. We did a couple more passes but didn’t get anything. We then
moved over to Grace Islands where there had been some action earlier in
the week and between the 4 boats there we worked it hard without getting
anything else. There was some bait in there but no action. We pulled a
couple buckets of prawns and a few crabs to finish off the day.

Eddie Matthei:

Fishing has continued to be fairly decent with a good amount of
bigger but just “undersized” fish and few nice Legal fish. Occasionally
you get into a school small shakers but I’m finding that overall the
fish are a nice size for this time of the year. This should make for
great fishing once they grow that last inch or so. The Vancouver harbour
has been holding fish but fish are showing west of Bowen Island as
well. I finally had a little spare time any decided to take out a good
friend who had never been salmon fishing on the Ocean.

We headed out on the Salty Dawg and dropped a couple of crab traps
and then dropped the lines around the at the QB marker. It was a little
drizzly but the water was flat calm and you didn’t need a fish finder to
tell you there was bait in the water. There were lots of birds picking
up small 3″ herring which is why the “3-3.5″ spoons have been working so
well. I have also found 4″ herring in some of the fish I’ve cleaned so
I’ve also been running 4″ spoons and have had more strikes on them when I
give the fish a choice.

So far the best patterns seem to be the Homeland Security, The
Kitchen Sink, Irish Cream and my Favourite the Green Glo. I like to use
Glo Flashers in low light conditions and more reflective flashers when
it’s bright sunny conditions. There’s lots of flashers out and it’s a
matter of switching up to see what the fish like that day or time of the
day. We were early for the slack tide and trolled for about an hour
before my buddy got to fight his first Chinook in the ocean which came
on a 4″ Green Go with a Chartreuse double glo flasher. The nice runs he
took made it seem like a bigger fish but it was just a 1/2″ shy of the
limit. These winter fish can put up a very good fight.

Slack tide was approaching and I had to decide whether to stay or
head to the mouth of the Capilano. I had heard a couple of good reports
lately and one very nice fish that was involuntary released and was
still out there. I trolled there in time for slack and met two other
boats but unfortunately there was not a lot of action there that day.
Sometimes you zig when you should have zagged! We each ended up with a
couple of large crab for dinner and my buddy got to fight his first
Chinook!

Any one hook any Halis yet this winter? A friend of mine believes he had one on not far outside of Langdale this morning...

Nice looking bugs. Great report!

was that comfort in chubby by any chance langdale seen him trolling there

definitely wasn't us hooking into a hali, but finished business and I were out yesterday and today...nothing other then the odd shaker yesterday, notta today...but I will blame that on the brutal winds/conditions today lol...not much time with the rods down and when they were down the wind decided where we trolled!
