Coho seemed to have dryed up near Constance. Tried on Sunday and just picked up jack springs. Oh well, fun while it lasted.

Hey guys, I have my father-in-law coming to town this weekend and was thinking of taking him out for some action....if there is anything to be had. I got skunked on the oak bay flats last sunday...so I don't really want to try that again unless there has been any action this week.

Anyone? Action? Waterfront? Constance? Oak Bay?

Thanks!

I hear Constance has been pretty good for 6-8 lb fish.
flats was bleak last weekend, we also tried the waterfront with no results.

Anyone been out targeting Coho lately? Wanted to head out Sunday off Victoria if possible...don't wanna drive to Sooke...what do you guys think the best chance is? Constance, or south off trial out in the tidelines? As an alternative, anyone been catching Winters off Constance or the flats? Haven't been out in awhile so any advice would be awesome!

I went out yesterday morning for a fish on Constance. Fished for a couple hours(9-11)Got one nice 8 pound unclipped winter spring in the boat. I had one other hit that looked like a good one. The rod was banging away, but didn't stick. I tried a classic old buck tail with a glow squirt pulled over it. They seemed to like it.

Went out in the rain today. Bathtub calm. Fished between esquiamalt and albert head. 160' . Caught two small hatchery chinook. Maybe legal.....probably not, doesnt matter, shook them off anyway. Haven't been out for a couple of months so nice to catch a couple. No flashers. One one a coyote killer with a small 1" squirt on the hook and the other line was a 3" tommy plug with the "ii" insert.

On one of the downriggers , the switch wasn't working. (after troubleshooting and checking the fuse). Not fun hand ranking up from the deep with 15 lb ball. Moved the third rigger from middle to the side and was able to keep two rods down. Btw, Scotty......... You will be getting a ring tomorrow!

Fished brochie ledge today. Caught a 60 cm feeder in about the first minute of having the lines down. That was it. Purple haze coho killer was the lure that did the job.

I fished Constance with a buddy this afternoon from 1230 to 330. We had 6 hookups. 1 spring in the boat(7lb), one salmon lost and 4 lingcod released. Coho killer and coyote got nothing on the one side, while this glow hootchie/bucktail combo got all the action on the other. Aside from the reasonable fishing action, we were stopped in our tracks on the way out by a big pod of Pacific White Sided Dolphins and then on the way home saw 2 humpback whales. Quite a beautiful November afternoon I'd say.

Hootchies like that always seem to be in the bottom of my tackle box. May have to move them up.
Gotta love the marine mammal escort !

Lots of action on winter springs today...
spoons on the bottom with glow flashers.
seals are in full combat mode, fairly typical for this time of year.

I thought I saw your truck at the ramp Craven. I was out at Constance from 930 to 2 and it was a great day of trout fishing...4 tiny feeders and 3 little lings. They were biting the squirts and the coho killers, but nothing on the coyote spoons. It's single hook, check gear very often, release, release, release practice time. I should have been using my fly rod. Largest was maybe 2 or 3 pounds. I saw one guy keep one out of about 20 boats cruising Constance that I saw.

We've been picking up 6" lings also, you have to check your gear often
otherwise you can be dragging one around without knowing.

Was on the bank today from 10 till 3. Absolutely a banner day for November...calm, sunny and even some heat in the sun...no jacket on all day and sunglasses too. 5 springs to 14 pounds, let one keeper go and lost 2 or 3 more. All on anchovy, glow heads, and between 130 and 135 feet. Out again tomorrow at daylight. Hope it is a repeat for weather and water.

Nice work! Tomorrow is predicted to be as nice as today so hopefully you'll have another banner day.

Well....delayed report, but better late than never.

I went out to Constance with a buddy monday morning and fished from 8:30-11. We kept a nice 8-9lb spring, lost another and released about 6 or 7 small ling cod. It is great to see the abundance of these little guys, but hard to keep your gear clean...especially if you can't tell if they are hanging on. The winning lure for us again was the white glow hootchie pulled over a green and black buck tail(posted pic of it last week).

Profisher - that sounds like an epic day out there! Question: I tend to stay away from anchovies out there because of all of the currents out there and use coho killers, spoons, hootchies(and bucktail combos). I can imagine the chovies are doing some crazy stuff down there with the extra current, but maybe the winter springs like it that way(and obviously they do with your results!) way as they seem to like the action of the spoons. So, my question, would you take a different approach if running chovies vs spoons out there? Only run with current? Slower? etc. Thanks!

We've been catching those baby lings for years, funny part is you rarely get an adult.
maybe they migrate to the rockpiles at a certain age.

No kidding, wouldn't it be nice if those were all big adults. Some areas of the bank have more lings then others - if you can't keep your lines free of them, move. You can't catch salmon if there's a ling on your spoon. Just like dogs, going faster will help keep them off but they'll still hit at even 3.5mph.

Hopefully hit the bank in a week or 2

I don’t know about Vic/Oak Bay but in Sooke you can catch big Ling in front of the harbor. Keep your ball just off the bottom (bottom bounce to keep it there) in 120 to 160 feet with a large herring and no flasher. I started doing this trying to catch Hali but ended up catching nice Ling. It surprised me that they are there because there is not much structure. Also catch them trolling deep in close on deep reefs but find you end up catching a lot of large Rockfish and since we can’t really keep them, there is not much point.
