The United States Of America was built on revolution, it has maintained the right in it's constitution to bear arms against a tyranical government . I am not for appreciation or criticism of this but I am aware that we in Canada have built our constitution on a different policy so we tend to view firearms possesion a lot different than the US citizens.
I am aware of statements such as "Those who beat their swords into plowshares will plow for those who did not."
In Canada we have had to fight for the permissions we have and we have come to a satisfactory level of ownership, our neighbors have yet to work something out.
