So what about tides?

Are you the kind of person that would go after salmon at the crack of dawn even on an ebbing flow, or would you wait until noon when if the current wasn't going to flood till one o clock.

I have been doing the crack o dawn fishes and not really looking at the tides. I am thinking this year to fish smarter not harder and was wondering, in your opinion, are the odds better if I wait till the flood or shoud I keep at the crack of dawn. For me, fishing all day is not always an option, though I wish.

Thanks.

Well...........

If there is a tide change at daybreak of ANY kind, you can count on me being out there at least one hour before it happens and hang on for another hour after the fact. Most of my best fish have succumbed to the rod at these times....Not all, more than half though. That high flood is another good one. I always try to work both when it's time to get serious.

Some like it rough...
Others just puke!.

Mr. Dean

I guess a nice flood at daybreak would be best of course.

Here's an example, Sunday's a slow ebb all morning from daybreak till around 11 am when the current should be at full ebb speed. Slack is at around three pm and then the tide will start to give a flood current. I am thinking that I should be on the water for two and fish the evening instead of my usual daybreak fish.

Help me clarify regarding sunday's tides Yote.... If you were an early riser wouldn't the very slow flood tide peaking at around 8:12 (Nanaimo) be a very good time , say 6:30 to 9:00 sunday morning? This was my plan...

Bottom.

I would think that your tide situation would definately warrant an early fish. The curents that I quoted were for Sooke though and it's an ebb current all morning and till around three when it switches to a flood.

Yote,
You and I have had this conversation and disagree so I am interested in the other members opinion.

My charts don't seem to match your info.
Sunday Tides for Sooke: Low tide 1050.. High tide 1855
Slack current is 1445.
I work with tides for salmon and currents for hali. Although when salmon fishing I check out the current to see how hard it will be to fish and whether to drop my lines and head east or west.
It looks to be a lllooonnnggg flood and an afternoon/evening fish may be in order. (I will be at Otter Sat afternoon.)

I think most would agree that an hour before and an hour after high slack in the a.m. would be ideal. But there are places that fish well on an ebb. If you have charters booked all day you have to work with what the tides that you are given.
I fish the shore line at the end of a flood and the tide lines on an ebb. Anyone have thoughts on this?

Good post buddy.

Looking at what yer up against, I think I would favor the evening fishery for Sunday then pull out the Hali stick for the rest of the week!!. Not a whole lot of movement goin on...

Good luck,
Dean

My mistake,
I took 1 hour off the chart instead of adding 1.

Now that we have clarified the tides...

What are your thoughts on fishing the tides. Floods, ebbs...

Time of day vs. tides?

And the the effects of currents vs. tides?

Casper... what site is your info from? I like the way it is layed out.

http://tbone.biol.sc.edu/tide/tideshow.cgi
The thing I like about this site is you can check off the graphic plot button and see the cruve of the tide over time. You can also pick the tide or current for just about any place in the world.

I personly still like to fish first light, and have caught many a fish this time of day especialy if there is no moon.I also like a good flood tide.

Tips up

My heading about tides might be a bit misleading. What I was referring to in my posts are the ebb and flood currents, i.e. the direction of the flow of water. My tables stated that the slack cuurent from ebb to flood for race passage was at around 14:30 for last Sunday.

The tides and currents are different and I was actually referring to the currents. So much for testing my theory last weekend, too frick'n windy for my little 18 footer.

In coming flood tides is the best time to fish for the most consistant spring action of course you will get them sometimes at first light ,workes even better if the incoming is at 7 or 8.

Good luck Wolf

How much of a correction is there for station 7020 Sooke and Otter or Sheringham points?

We are planning to be up there 30 June - 4 July. 22' Campion Answering to Ballard 'Ho . (We be 'ho's ;) ) Drop by for a pop or perhaps a hand or two of Hold 'em!

It's good to have friends.
It's better to have friends with boats.
