oh boy its going to be fun tomorrow at the derby

in new Zealand, it is supposidly VERY popular to fish at night, and most people prefer it to fishing in the day for trout. they use big flys and cast and retrive or slow troll along the surface.. and do much better then you would suspect... supossidly the darkest nights are the best too (not the full moon)

people often forget salmon and trout can sense vibrations in the water just as well as scent and visually... at night, when it is quite.. it is much easier to pick up

now is this because the water is so clear in many rivers and lakes in NZ and they need the cover of darkness to get consisten results?

I have fished the Cowichan for years at night using big black flies to tempt those ever wary browns but you never know what you may hook in that flow. Black flies have a more definitive silhouette against the night sky as opposed to lighter colored or bright colored flies. The same technique has produced on the big Sheridan Lake bows during the traveller sedge hatch in late June/early July as well as out on the chuck for salmon.
