SFAB had requested implementation of salmon by-catch retention and DNA sampling program to assess potential impacts to Chinook recovery, particularly stream type interior Fraser stocks which are currently limiting other recreational, FN and commercial troll fisheries due to conservation measures implemented that restrict fishery opportunity. This is a positive move, and we are looking for DFO to develop avoidance strategies that contribute to reduction in trawl by-catch in known hotspots. Trawl fishery can plan fisheries that effectively avoid the impacts so long as we gather data and have adaptive management approaches.
