Live imported Snakehead fish at Price Smart Foods in Richmond BC

Time to get real!

It always take something to happen for people to react, it's a shame we had to read about this! I am continuing my efforts to ban these imported fish. Do as much as you can by continnuing to call your DFO and Goverment officials! This needs to stop!

Moving this over from the General Forum. I should have posted it in this thread in the first place.

Alien Snakehead fish in BC Waters???

If this species gets established in BC a lot of wild fish are going to suffer along with some sport fisheries.

You see these things live on display in some ethnic restaurants and aquarium stores. Governments need to ban the import of these monsters immediately. The largest of them can grow to 66 lbs; that is a lot of trout and bass needed as food.

When people get tired of the pets they have an emotional attachment too and feel guilty for buying in the first place, they like to convince themselves that a ‘Free Willie’ moment is justified to return the fish or bunny to nature by setting it free.

This is especially so if parents feel guilty and do not want to upset their children by killing something that should not exist here. So they take the kid and let the fish go and feel good.

The problem is that BC is not the nature these monster fish were intended to live in.

Whenever this alien Snakehead species gets established out of their own habitat it is not good for native fish. They actually crawl on land to colonize new lakes and waterways at night when it’s cool. They can move from ditch to ditch to storm water runoff pipes, to streams, to ponds, rivers and lakes.

“Last month, two of the fish were found in a small lake near Philadelphia. Snakeheads have also been found in Florida, North Carolina, California and Massachusetts. None have yet turned up in Canada, where Ontario has banned the sale of snakehead along with several invasive species of carp and goby”.

“Last year, a House of Commons committee recommended banning the importation of all snakeheads and four kinds of invasive Asian carp but the Fisheries and Oceans Department is still conducting a risk assessment on the impact of a ban. Snakeheads are still being imported, primarily for food”.

So last year a House of Commons Committee recommended banning these fish but under the outstanding leadership of our East Coast Fisheries Minister and Harper; DFO has done nothing and instead has been studying the issue. Looks like they wanted to be sure none of their core supporters would take a hit financially if they protected Canada and stopped the import of this destructive alien species.

We should not be surprised; they are cheerleaders and tax dollar supporters for the Norwegian corporations that have introduced alien Atlantic salmon to our BC coastal waters.

Thaks for this post, Rocky. Keep up the pressure on these good-for-nothings that have abandoned Canada for the corporate crowd. Demand that they do the right things. Write them, call them, visit them. They are your employees and they are doing an incredibly incompetent job. Force them to be accountable.

Has anyone tried to contact the local Canada Customs agents in the Area ? They seem to be up to speed on what invasive species can do if introduced. They seem to have no issue confiscating any food items I try to bring into the country from overseas, ie Mangos etc.. due to the possiblity on a bug or two.......I'm sure they can do a follow up on the impact of wild Snakehead !!!
