Fisheries and Oceans Canada had predicted about five million Fraser River sockeye would return in 2019, but only 600,000 made it.

“We had made an estimate of the number at about 870,000, so we were much more accurate,” said Beamish. “We didn’t catch that many fish in the survey, but it was over a large enough area that we knew what to expect.”

Beamish is a DFO scientist, or was at least. Maybe this will lead to development of more accurate stock assessment methods but he seems to think it is too early to know. Makes sense that information closer to the return time would be more accurate and, with DNA testing getting quicker and cheaper, being able to assess stocks when they are mixed is becoming more reliable.
