I have not fished Cowichan lake in years, So I am wondering what type of gear the guys are using and what depths are being fished. Unfortunately I cannot make it to the Derby this Friday (Dam job) pretty bummed. I want to get up there as soon as next weekend, any info helps,Thanks.

I don't have the regs in front of me but isn't there a bait ban on Lake Cowichan until March 31???? You might want to check it out, but ya, bait is always good where and when it's legal to use.

If I was only given one lure to use in that lake at this time of the year it would be a plug of some type. Green (crockadile) or blue have worked for me. Don't overlook the lowly wee tad either, they work magic there too. Troll close to shore in about 20 feet of water and try to find old pilings that are left over from the logging shows that once frequented the lake.

Good luck.

Cowichan Lake has a bait including Bear Lake, try plugs or spoons, look for the bait, and get ready. We'll be at the derby, 21' tin boat name "Fortunate" hope to see you. Dress warm.

Small choves in a tiny teaser head always work well for me! If your lookin for the big boys that is!!

Pass the Pack

thanks guys! I thought about using anchovies there, they work great in Elk lake.I also have the small tomic plugs I want to try a few,see what happens.
Cheers.

A black and silver Rapala trolled deep along side the reef by Goat Island has produced well for me over the years and close to the rock wall in the gap.

Bags, will you EVER learn? A few of us jumped to your defense earlier, please don't make us regret it. There's newbies on this site who may take what I assume are your jokes seriously.

I've been fishing Lake Cowichan pretty damn successfully over the past 15 years or so, and feel I can say with confidence that based on my experience, bait is TOTALLY UNNECESSARY there unless you're a complete moron.

3 inch Tomics work well (try the 232 and remember its also single hooks only). Fish 'em without any weight, about 100 pulls cack from the boat - thats right, about 100 pulls. You need to keep your gear well back so the fish have time to "unspook" after you troll over them.

Chrome and blue, Chrome and green, Party Girl, Cop Car, Nasty Boy and Pink 3.5 inch Coyotes have also produced well for me. Either fish them 5 feet behind a small gang troll with no weight (40 pulls) or with a couple of split shot and no gang troll (50 - 60 pulls). Watch the inside rod on a turn so you don't get hung up. Troll as fast as you can and still keep your gear down. Use good swivels.

One of my faves is the old Ross Swimmertail in the 3 inch model that looks exactly like a little Kokanee. One or two splitshot, about 75 pulls back and HANG ON!

The Lake can be a lot of fun. Rememr to let the big ones (over 50 cm) go. This weekend you might need an icebreaker in order to get out there though. I think I'll wait 'till it warms up a bit. Good luck....

Greetings MrSmiley,

I might check the regs on using "finfish or parts of finfish" as bait in BC fresh waters.

Cheers,
Alex

... "high water" is when you can fish from your car.
