Being the nice guy that I am, I am going to spill the beans for those that havent already figured it out...

They are jiggable right now if you want bait or herring for pickeling.

French Creek up to Comox and most likely other areas too.

We got out yesterday. Caught a cooler full in an hour-right in front of French Creek (towards Parksville Bay) in 15 feet of water.

Hey CL, I didn't see you out jiging yesterday. You should have come out and played.

PM me you email address as your PM does not work.

Cheers,

forgive my ignorance guys please. When you refer to jigging for herring, what type of gear and set up are you using. The last time i fished for herring it was like 1974 or so.Back then we used to cast a rake of the gov dock in Westview. If no rake then a bunch of treble hooks.I am sure things have changed since then? Thanks!

No place I would rather be (FISH ON)

Hey FA Drop me a note at Dirt432000@(no spam)yahoo.ca

any one ever drug a sabiki rig behind the boat when trolling for salmon?

Yes, it does work but that brings on a problem if there are Coho in the area. Now sure Chinooks will do the same thing but all I have had dealings with are Coho distroying rigs. They target the herring you are draging then they break your rigs to pieces.

Yup, the Pilchards were in think a few years back in Sooke, while trolling for salmon we had a spin casting rod ready with a sabiki rig. As soon as the sounder went black or you could see them boil ahead we cast as far as we could in front/away from the boat and let the sabiki rig sink, jig and load up as many as you could before you trolled past it, reel it in quick and recast. Don't think I would troll a sabiki rig, the casting technique worked well while trolling, we were loading up on Pilchards while trolling for salmon.. we sure did get some strange looks from others.. it was fun. Best was targeting them drift over a big school and sink the sabiki down to the school... lots of fun. Always have a good supply of Sabiki jigs on the boat.
Buy them on E-bay !! there dirt cheep! $1 each. (10 packs for $9.99) type in "sabiki" in the e-bay search..

A roe herring seine fishery opened Sunday Feb. 28 at 07:00 hours. The fishery

harvested along the Vancouver Island shoreline between Icarus Pt. and Horswell
Bluff near the entrance to Departure Bay. The preliminary catch estimate based
on fishery hails is at or near the quota. The seine quota is 5020 tons. Further
seine opportunities will be dependent on assessment of any remaining quota. An
announcement to the fleet will be made this AM regarding further fishing
opportunities.

Makes sense - now we can see why the companies were charging so high for licenses this year. Looks like they were trying to create greater opportunity for a mop up fishery in the end for the Seine fleet. The Gills that are working won't make any money this year. The initial quality is down and the market is low...shakin' for fun.

R.

you obviously have no idea what you are talking about...

I drove down the island highway at Nanoose Bay the other day and saw numerous commerical boats anchored all over near Schooner Cove and the area near WoodGrove mall in Nanaimo.

hi, heading up the island on saturday. any info on where the herring are currently located is much appreciated.

Thats why i got out of herring fishing, I had to lease all my gillnet licences. The last few years i just couldn't do it...I am thinking i quit when i got a bill from the company instead of a cheque[xx(]
If you have a commercial licence you should fish it or sell it or retire it. No leasing allowed.
