Great Trip!

Been out on Barkley canyon (west off Beale) Monday & Tuesday, floated overnite Monday nite, the bite is wide open when you find them!look for jumpers, boils or grease spots, if lucky pick up one on the troll, than stop throw out live bait and drop backs. don't bleed Albees over the side as you will be surrounded by blue sharks and the schooled Albees disappear. Water temp 59.6 deep blue colour --We got 19 on monday morning -- filled in the rest of afternoon cleaning Albees and catch & releasing blue sharks --- drift fished for swordfish during nite -- no runs no hits no errors but a beautiful nite. 23 Albees on Tuesday morning than headed back to the barn. It's a morning bite! All albacore 19 to 24 lbs, best troll bait 5.5 inch tuna clone green black also purple black cedar plug. Live bait herring (jigged up)and squid - Albacore full of squid and lessor amounts of bait fish I assume as anchovies -- unsure due to digested condition. Up Side Outstanding fishing 42 fish between 4 on board, downside 115 gals of fuel ----- divided 4 ways not that painful --- saw & spoke to 2 US boats visiting banfield and saw a 26 gradey white with vancouver id # who didn't answer radio calls.
If weather holds this weekend will be out again --- possible last weekend of season -- our call sign is "offshore" and will relay fish location # that is if interested in pursuing 40 mile per hour fish instead of 12 mile per hour salmon. The more boats out there -- the sharing of information leads to less searching and more catchin.

Excellent post Reel Deal. I used to spend alot of time commercial fishing over top that canyon. Don't have the sports boat to get out there but it sounds like fun...

I posted some info late august under Tuna heading, range to canyon drop off from beale is 35 miles, the furthest I went off shore is 60 range, however its all about water temp and deep blue clarity, I have picked up a few in green water amongst salmon trollers within 20 miles of land. If there is interest I will post a overview of Albacore fishing which applies to Washington & BC which will give the basics. There is a Oregon / Washington tuna site http://ifish.net/ This is a great site for salmon and tuna ----go to discussion --- than ----click the salty dogs --- good information – on lure types they use, techniques in cleaning (charking) etc, etc. I utilize http://coastwatch.pfel.noaa.gov/data.html for my surface temp, click on the eye, Than click area WN, click most recent sat. pix ( grey mass is usually clouds or fog) bottom of page plot options click custom and go to Wash. Than click off cloud mask and click replot this will be your starting point as you play with this site the info is incredible. There is another surface weather site http://www.terrafin.com/sstview/ however they charge $ and not worth the expense if you search comments in salty dogs – my view anyways. I don’t mind sharing info --- the more boats out there searching the less fuel we all burn. Drop me a reply if interested in additional info, lures, obtaining live bait etc.

When i did the tuna commercially a couple years ago we used a surface temp program that I believe was called "Seaview" ???? Might be worth checkin out. And yes the tuna are LOADS of fun, even when your working a 18 hour day and handlining them in. But some days with 300+ fish were quite exciting(and exhausting) especially one day we had a bloodbath and pulled damn near 600 fish in the day!!!

Very</u> Happy to hear of your success.
I remember about 10 years ago when a number of Charters from WCVI were advertising Tuna but upon contacting them I found that not one had ever been out.
Having fished them out of Westport WA I know just how fast and powerful they are.
