The first recorded attempts at sport fishing in British Columbia, date back as far as 1845 when Roderick Finlayson guided Captain John Gordon of the H.M.S America to British Columbia salmon. Just who was the first sportsman to take the first B.C. native fish on a fly, it is not certain. However, by the 1950's fly fishing had become a very popular pursuit for many, including pioneers such as Roderick Haig-Brown and Jack Shaw.

As time progressed and the popularity of the sport of fly fishing grew in British Columbia, many fly patterns were developed and adopted as favorite British Columbia patterns. Today, some of the earlier patterns are still used to fool fish, even as new patterns emerge.
