...got out late this afternoon for a quick roll around our home waters. We headed straight out from the fingers toward the nipple into about 1100 feet of water and started working toward neck in mid channel. There had been a bit of chatter on the radio, with some success prior to us getting out. We played around washing gear at varying depths from 70 down to 229. No luck until the final 15 minutes, Cheech picked up an under size on a 50/50 chrome and gold #5 Diamond Lance.

Nanaimo reports on this site and others are fairly quiet compared to the true reality - FVI has some recent activity...but, for the most part, I find it quite comical that the info is held so hush - it truly is funny, I mean really, look at how big our pond is, and how many fish are swimming by each and every day!LOL
...so, from reliable sources who have sworn me to secrecy - please stop! It is silly to play these games, secret emails and coded radio exchange and quiet cell conversations are less than fruitful. Gawd I am really tiered of it and will not participate any further...for them who feel the same as me, and that it really does not matter what, where, when or how the fish was caught feel free to post right here. Finding needles in hay stacks will become much easier through open networking...
Fishing over the past few weeks has been good in areas off the fingers, Neck, Brick Yard in 600 to 1100 feet of water at depths of 60 to 240. Many fish have been under size with great opportunities to capture keepers that have been reported from 8 to 22 pounds. Most have been in the low digits to mid teens. I have also heard from reliable sources of halibut being landed in the french creek and thrasher areas.
Popular tackle has been, silver horde, coyote, gibbs, palco, krippled k spoons and various hoochies in needlefish and octopus styles. Colors to look for, green splatter back, flaming hans, green glow, l26gbd, purple haze, nickle neon green, 232, chrome/brass, b52, cop car, r33.
I'll be out on sunday morning first light with "Mi Chica" - see you out there...give us a call. I was out last week with Cheech and Magic Lures...they'll help too.
Thanks for reports from Hot Rod's, Derby, Cheech, Mi Chica, Magic Lures, Bruce, Brian, Roland, Bob, Henry, Allan...be free, keep it going build the network.
R.
EDIT to add: If running from Nanaimo, both directions, either right or left have opportunity for success, areas in front of Gabriola to Thrasher have shown signs of decent fishing in the last three days and heading toward Parksville can give rewards of salmon around or near Gerald and Ballenas island. Outside Lasqueti island has give a few anglers the taste of high teens to mid twenties. All good - all fun. |

| Its pretty funny to hear all the chat about how "HOT" Nanaimo fishing is right now. Its average at best with 75% of the boats out there getting skunked on a daily basis. |

that boat launch is pretty busy alright, there are a few fish around, didn't fish for long yesterday and between tides in strong current hit two out at entrance nothing big 10lbs or so each. bonked one, and lost one that jumped 15-20 feet behind the boat and spat the hook in mid air it was pretty cool to see, a buddy of mine got a couple out at entrance yesterday in his boat on the afternoon low same sizes, so fishys around for sure, but not like last year. not too many hogs hittin the dock,

Not to say you are incorrect as day to day things change and some just happen to find a pocket of fish where others might not. Perhaps rt off gfingers isn't as good but here is a report I recieved for May 14th offshore of flat tops ( 7 keepers in the boat to 25 lbs, sounds pretty darn good for 7.5 hrs fishing)
Fished the 800 foot mark straight out from Sylva Bay from 10:30 until 2:00. Then 3:00 until 7:00. Caught a 8, 9, 10 and 22 in the morning. Caught a 10, 14, and 25 in the evening. All at 140 on Green/Glow Coyote
.....and yet another report on May 13th of a fellow fishing in closer fishing bottom landed 4 cinook and a hali ( 12, 13, 18, 18#, plus 27# hali) in a 4.5 hr fish !
Yesterday sounded good too. |

I certainly didn't say it was hot...now that's comical! LOL
Fishing was actually not too bad out off thrasher today...we played around for most of the day, we were 1 for three - I blew both of my lottery tickets, while Mi Chika's fish of the day was the highlight of our trip. The chinook barked off some line and then all of a sudden a fast short run and then dead weight - oh, oh...seal has it. So with about 5 minutes of fish battle the balance of Jim's 25 minute battle was about 20 min. with a seal trying to steal his fish. We kept him under water for long periods at a time while we inched the boat closer to him...finally he surfaces 15 to 20 feet off the stern of the boat, we start yelling and stuff and splashing the net etc...he lets go and the fish comes directly to the boat and into the net. I guestimated 18-20, Jim's scale read 21. It was a great day to be on the water. There were quite a few Vancouver boats over off Thrasher also and Grade out in the deep water. For us green splatter back cuttlefish and Diamond Lance spoons were what produced for us...some of the chatter from other successful anglers was anchovy, green glow spoons and the green splatter as well. Not a lot of big fish being reported, however the odd teen to twenties...

Don't you just hate it when work keeps interfering with fishing!!! I was hoping to get the boat in the water and moored this weekend but it didn't even get close.
I'm going to moor the boat at Schooner for a while this summer and hope to meet some new faces from the forum and swap some tails...
Might even take you out for a while Rob, maybe. So no fishing till next weekend then

Rob already reported our results for yesterday, so I'll just add a few comments. First, that pot licking seal flat wore me out! Still, Ii's not too often that we get to win a battle with a seal, so I'll take it and enjoy the eating! It seemed that there were not too many local lads out, it was mostly boats over from Vancouver. Regardless, it was nice to see some boats on the water. It was fairly sloppy early in the day but by afternoon it was a nice flat pond with almost no swell - sweet. The fishing was definitely hit and miss and it was obvious that the springs had not read the bite guide The theme of the day seemed to be persistence eventually paying off, and enjoying the time on the water while you wait for action. As for parking at Brechin, there would be few problems (most days) if the city insisted that the rules regarding boat/trailer only parking be enforced.
To much water, too little time |

Well...if some of you folks aren't doing so well over there...and complaining about it...here are some nice reports....and some of us "Vancouver guys" have been doing well over there consistently. Keep in mind the charter results are with "rookies" on the rods. ....
Here are BonChovy Fishing Charters and Pacific Angler have been producing some good results:
May 18: http://www.bonchovy.com/blog/2010/05/may-18-report/
May 14: http://www.bonchovy.com/blog/2010/05/may-14-report/
David Korsch of Predator Charters has also been doing very well and was over on a recent trip hooking quite a few.
