I dont fish those areas because winter springs like to stay near the bottom and it is hard to follow the bottom when its rockey like that. So areas with sandy bottom and consisten depth tend to be easier to fish. There was one guy off the trap yesterday. Also Whirl Bay produced for my grandfather this morning. 2 one 7 and the other 9 pounds. Green and white hootchie 180ft. Good luck Boys, Im headed out for a 2 hour stint in the bay.
Managed to get out on Saturday, fished near the flagpole and picked up one spring.... better then none. Checked the crab traps and got lucky there too. Don't know if I'll be able to get out again this year or not. Think I'll go out New Years Day weather permitting. I tried to get out last year on New Years Day but we had a lot of snow on the ground then..... Steve.
Fished the waterfront today. Cold northeast wind. One fish to the boat only to be grabbed by a seal. Lost the fish, flasher and hootchie. Saw a few other boats but didn't see any other fish.
I got a "friend of a friend" report that says they caught one 17 pounder and another above 15 pounds in the Harbour Mouth, near Possession Point, 60 feet depth. Described the fishing as great. It has sounded slower lately, so that's a better report than most...not sure about that depth though...that sounds a little "fishy" to me
Fished Friday and Saturday out off the Bluffs. None stop action both mornings. Had to weed through some smalls as usual but easy limits of 6-10# each day for two. Bonus was a 20-25# hali on the Friday.
Fishing this productive and there were more hali hunters anchored off the Bluffs than trollers.
Lots of feeders west of Secretary. Like JDO said you have to weed through the smaller ones so stick to big singles. Biting on anything and everything. 130-160ft Tons of true cod?? Never seen so many.
i think if theres lots of little ones kickin around id be more inclined to go crabbing for that nights winter dinner rather than possibly killing a few springs just to get to a 6 pounder? going for a halibut might be the way to go also when theres lots of shakers...if your catching those little shakers...try moving somewhere different...otter point? or muir...might be better chance of getting a decent sized one when i have hit the shakers at secretary or bluffs...just an idea guys...those 2 to 4 pounders are the future big ones i like to get off possession before work in the summer;) just stirring the pot!
