I use the Scotty 175# braid, smaller diameter than the 200# pp, and works just fine.

Good plan, use what you have I like wire - and the hum - but I hate rust and broken strands so I am converting to the dark side with 200# pp. spooled up 1 rigger with it already but have not tested it yet. If you get braid down the road go with the 200# PP some guys get away with different stuff but I've heard some nightmares about other brands too.
I do know Salmon do not mind the hum of that wire at all.
if you go to braid change out the pulley. the abrasions from the previouse cables will wear on your braid.

Does anyone use some kind of backing under their thin diameter braid? Just wondering-- I was told that if you spool to much braid on, it causes the spool to implode,(whatever that means); anyone had problems doing this. I thought if I put more line on the drum the weight would come up faster.
larger the drum diameter the more dificult for the motor and you depth counter will be out of whack
depth counter on manuals is completely independent of the wire/line, series of pins on the wheel that tick a gear on the counter. If you put TOO MUCH line on your drum you will have more then your counter will be out. When I spoke with scotty they said max 400 of wire, so with that thinking line would be better as it doesn't pack in as thick.
Very best,
Ian
