New Fraser Spring regs out today

    Fishery Notice

    Category(s): RECREATIONAL - Salmon

Subject: FN0510-RECREATIONAL - Salmon - Subareas 29-11 to 29-17 (tidal waters of the Fraser River) - Fraser River Spring (age 5-2) and Summer (age 5-2) Chinook

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Further to FN0489 the in season prediction of Chinook returns to the Fraser
River through June 15th is approximately 47,000. Given the uncertainty about
the in season estimated return to the Fraser River, the Department plans to
implement management actions consistent with zone 2 after July 15, 2012.

Specific management actions announced previously to protect Fraser Spring 4-2
chinook will remain in effect until July 15, 2012 when greater than 70% of the
Spring 4-2 Chinook run has entered the Fraser.

All retained Chinook must be at least 30 cm.

Effective at 00:01 hours Monday, July 16 and until 23:59 hours Friday July 27,
2012, in Subareas 29-11 to 29-17 the daily limit for wild or hatchery marked
chinook salmon is one (1) per day with a minimum length of 30 cm and a maximum
    length of 77 cm.

Effective 00:01 hours Saturday, July 28 and until 23:59 hours Friday, August
31, 2012, in Subareas 29-11 to 29-17, the daily limit for wild or hatchery
marked chinook salmon is four (4) per day only one of which can be greater than
    50 cm.

Effective 00:01 hours Saturday, September 1 and until 23:59 hours Monday,
December 31, 2012, in Subareas 29-11 to 29-17, the daily limit for wild or
hatchery marked chinook salmon is four (4) per day only one of which can be
    greater than 62 cm.

    Variation Order No. 2012-272

This reflects a change to the B.C. Tidal Waters Sport Fishing Guide or to the
BC Freshwater Salmon Supplement. The on-line version of this guide will be
updated within 24 hours of this notice. Please browse: http://www.pac.dfo-
    mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/rec/SFG-GPS-eng.htm

Sport anglers and guides are reminded to label and submit heads from adipose
fin-clipped (hatchery-marked) Chinook and Coho salmon to the Salmon Head
Recovery Program. Recovery of coded-wire tags from recreational fishers
provides critical information for coast-wide stock assessment. For more
information and locations of Depots contact the Salmon Sport Head Recovery
Program at (866) 483-9994 or visit the following site: http://www.pac.dfo-
    mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/rec/tag-etiquette/prize-prix-eng.htm

Did you witness suspicious fishing activity or a violation? If so, please call
the Fisheries and Ocean Canada 24-hour toll free Observe, Record, Report line
    at (800) 465-4336.

    FOR MORE INFORMATION:

can someone explain subareas to me? I read the regs but am doubtful I am always reading them right.

Is there a map on DFO's site that labels the subareas?

4 springs per day in the river? I wonder why the limit is double in the river? Everywhere else on the coast is 2 per day.

Effective 00:01 hours Saturday, July 28 and until 23:59 hours Friday, August
31, 2012, in Subareas 29-11 to 29-17, the daily limit for wild or hatchery
marked chinook salmon is four (4) per day only one of which can be greater than
    50 cm.

Makes no sense, unless they want to weed out the jacks ?
only one greater than 50cm equates to nothing bigger than about 3 lbs.

Jackel's right. That is exactly the intent.
