Braid Fad Over?

To each there own but if the op reads this thread through and through it is obvious that he has been reading the wrong things and that certain person at that sporting good store is full of shite lol.

It is no fad. It is dominating if anything. I have had zero problems with 3 year old on my downriggers (that used to have wire and have a groove in the pulleys to boot). I don't know what you guys do to your line to make it fail? and I thought I was rough on my stuff lol.

Ive used braid for the last three years without a single problem on my 3 scotty electrics,have a new high speed model which came with wire so ill run it for the season its new so no frees yet but soon as I get cut or poked by a strand it will be coming off asap.I like to use 500 ft of braid for two reasons one when Im fishing on the westcoast I fish sometimes up to 250 ft for hali and if I were to snag up and break the line I still have 250 ft on there to continue fishing,also with the bigger amount on the drum the circumference is bigger so it
take less time to get it up,also exclusively run 15 lb balls going to 20 when I run out of 15 witch could be awhile,20 lb balls are not to much for the scottys to handle it says the rate right on the box can't recall what it is though,be interesting in seeing if I catch more fish on the braid or wire have a report at the end of october..

osama my buddy backed out on me cost a lot to take it on by myself,trust me Id love to be there Ill be coming out eventually as I got 2 100' ft lengths of chain for al chambers dock,
fishing for chinooks has been really good on the inside so ill be over of gabriola this weekend,to bad I couldn't make it I have one more day to get a crew together so you never know what could happen.frickin love Bamfield !!!!!!!

I have run 15's on my Scotty's for 6 years, still original motors in 'em! Only prob I have had is reed switches.

I've been runninig braid for over 5 years on my manual downriggers, 150 lb Tuff Line XP. Love the stuff. Much less, blow back, no annoying humming noise, less weeds sticking on the line. When the stuff ever wears out, I'm going down to 100 lb test. I only run 7-10 lb balls.

And another thing. The friction of braid on those scotty plastic pulleys (especially old abraided ones like mine …LOL) must be terrific. Synthetic polymer moving over plastic is notorious for that. The first let down of the day on bone dry braid must generate some heat as a result and that is what has killed my braid. We would never run mono through rods with plastic rod rings – only polished shiny anodised metal will do. So braid is great as a fishing line and would be fine in de luxe downriggers with polished anodised pulleys running on ball bearings…LOL. That is what that high pitched pinging noise of the braid going over my pulley was trying to tell me. The more I think about it the more the physics of braid on plastic scotty pulleys sounds sketchy to me. I wish I had realised it before I lost those two 12lb balls!!

the abuse is not limited to the pulley. I take care to rotate the guide ring on the boom. That thing grooves up very quickly and creates a nice sharp edge in those grooves---with all the braid use going on, I wish Scotty would address that with stainless guides on their booms
