Thread: Tofino & Ucluelet Reports - Spring-Summer 2012

  1. #161
Finally I have some time to post a report from our fishing trip to Ukee. We had an absolute blast and choosing Matt (Ironnoggin) as our guide really paid off. First morning out within 2-3 minutes of the gear hitting the water we were into fish and that pace didn't really stop until we were limited out on Springs for four guys. Nothing big but delicious BBQ sized fish from 10-12lbs. There was enough Coho by-catch just trying to get the gear down through them and didn't really want to bleed a bunch out while we picked through to find the hatchery fish. Constantly popping the clips on the downriggers on the way down they were a really fun "nuisance" to have! Have heard that there were some smaller fish but all but a couple of the hoes we were into were absolutely beautiful fish in the 8-10lb range. Also the Halibut seemed to love our gear as well as we got out limit the first day and three the second day just trolling above the mud biggest being a fat 40lber. The boys I brought out are not experienced rods and Matt was a consummate profesional walking them through how play the fish using his Islander knuckle busters. They had an absolute hoot as my two brothers had only had really limited success fishing ECVI in the Comox area and the other had never fished the ocean before. No pukers on board either which was a bonus and they kept saying it was going to blow and it never really materialized. Day two the action was not quite as fast and furious but Matt's knowledge really paid off and we still had steady action for most of the day. We already have a plan for next year, can't effing wait!

The big Salmon haven't yet arrived at Ucluelet but, there's some larger one just starting to show up. The 25 was the biggest and all the big ones were caught at the Northend of Lighthouse Bank. The 55 Hali was caught just west of Lighthouse Bank. 275ft dragging the bottom. BTW, everything was caught with a Green Flasher and Glow white hoochie with a mylar skirt. Salmon seem to be high so far when we went out. Around 135ft at 3kts. worked the best for us. Good luck who ever goes.

Bigger average Chinook showing up over the last two days both inshore and offshore. Coho are pretty thick all around. Detailed report coming soon.
