Backing

Last night I was putting on fresh line on my reels,only to find that one did not have backing on!It was a gift,and had line on it(Maxima)when I got it.Now I got to thinking about you guys on this Inter fishnet, and said"I wonder how many guys use backing?What type?How much?All my fly reels,I've allways put it on,can't see why salt reels should be any dif.MMMM?

Usually 100 yds of 20# Dacron-some of which I haven't seen in years (!)

Backing serves a couple of purposes:
1. to take up spool space so that you dont have to fill the spool completely with the line you're using
2. most importantly, to act as a tension absorber when using monofilament line on a reel that has a plastic spool. If a reel with a plastic spool is filled with monofilament line without a dacron or similar backing, the mono will create enough coiled tension to actually bust the plastic spool. I know, it's happened to me!

Use it on anything from a M-1 to an Islander. I try to 'recycle' old hali lines this way...

On a Shimono 4000 GT 300 yards of Ande 30# mono with 300 yards of 65# Spider wire fills her up nicely.
