    Realistic Moorage Options

Options are few and far between, however with a 50% rate hike set for April for annual moorage at Pedder Bay Marina said to be raised to 6.00 plus ft, LOA from Kicker to bow tip ouch! A 16 foot boat now becomes 19' boat with kicker or outboard up.[xx(]

Many are now looking at more realistic options, within striking range of the fishing grounds given the hard economic crunch and high fuel prices, this is tough on many and just poor timing for 50% rate increase. I tend to think more than a few will just move on elsewhere into Sooke.

There has been some word of Cheanuh fixing things up with a new resort/Marina? Is Sunny shores still going down hill? Sooke Harbour looks nice! You would think with all of this water around us there would be more options available.

If you think $6 is unreasonable, try the Victoria or Sidney area. At Oak Bay it's $9 per foot based upon the size of the slip plus power. If your boat is 19ft but they only have a 24' slip, you pay for the 24'.

A lot of places are doing a calculation on total volume. The LOA x width x price. Rationale is that a 30' boat that is 10' wide actually takes up much more space than a 25' boat that is 8' wide and should be charged a higher rate per foot. Marinas make more money selling slips to smaller boats as they can fit many more of them into the same real estate.

A sign of the times, you get what you pay for. Lots of work has been done around there for the new campground, figured there might be an increase. Not to many options to pick from in the area, be nice with water and power at each finger though.

I just got my moorage bill in the mail, I'm getting charged $6.30 per foot for annual moorage. Not only that but I'm getting charged 22' for a 17.5 foot boat and it's not a slip. Better start workin on Monday's instead of fishin.....

my local marina has been raising prices for the last 4 years. currently, it's about $8/ft + $ for power. it is very easy to find a slip of 26' available not only right now but pretty much right up to the peak summer months. this marina is most interested in taking out those small boat slips and reconfiguring for larger boats which remain in the water year around, lots more revenue.

Regretably, business is business, and with waterfront real estate being what it is worth right now, there has to be a premium. Cheanuh and Sooke are still cheaper to moore, but watch what your insurance premium does!
