Look up using a vacuum bleeder, this is what mechanics use and I am sure it would facilitate your task.:)

Another point. A refinery is being built in the USA to handle some of the Bakken shale oil due to the shortage of diesel in that same area. Pity you say?
Have to correct you on that, the bitumen is not to be exported to China, it will be refined at a considerably lower price than in Canada and then the product is to be exported to many places...
