Yam kicker shift cable

Went down to boat this morn. Lowered kicker 2002 yami 8 HT power tilt., shifter always left in neutral, pushed start button on tiller handle and nothing! Lots of battery power! I can push shifter into forward and watch shift cable slide in the tiller arm BUT NOTHING moves inside the engine. Limited shift travel in tiller arm when pushed into reverse. Without some deconstruction I can not see where shift cable is attached to motor. Im hoping its a broken shift cable and not a lower end problem? Help!

When the shift cable engages look at front..Does the entire bracket assembly come out? Just look where cable comes in.If so the screw that holds the bracket it to housing rattled loose easy fix. It will probably be in the bottom well on motor... When you hit reverse you would have little movement. If you find it tighten it with loctite and always carry a spare. Its a crappy design flaw in these engines.
