Hello Fellow Anglers

As Murphy's Law dictates, the day after I sent my previous newsletter (last week), our local fishing opportunities changed drastically.

An associate went out for an afternoon trip, and thought he would try the Dundarave/Capilano area - why not, there wasn't much going on anywhere else.....Anyway, to make a long story short, THE COHO ARE IN!!! He landed 11 hatchery Coho up to 8 pounds that afternoon, and lost at least as many. I have fished it a few times since then, and it definitely wasn't a "flash in the pan". The Coho are already in off West Vancouver in good numbers, and with a halfway decent "hits to landing" percentage, limits of hatchery Coho are definitely possible. In addition, some Chinook weighing into the high 20's also began showing up off West Vancouver's shoreline this past weekend, so it looks as if the West Vancouver Coho/Chinook fishery is now in full swing (a week or two early).

We are also seeing more Chinook entering Howe Sound every day, and several were landed at Hole in the Wall during the Bill Thompson Derby today (Sunday). This fishery is just going to get better and better every day, and we should see a bunch of 20 and 30 pound fish arrive withing the next week or so. Within a week or two I know we will be having some great catches of BIG fish (several per boat) coming in from the "upper sound". The Gulf Islands still have some decent fishing for Chinook in the 10 to 25 pound range, though morning wind has limited trips there to "afternoons only" on most days.

As for later in the summer, I got some extremely good news today. Nothing is official or "set in stone", but it looks as if the Sockeye run is substantially larger than originally thought, and there is something in the works that should keep us open for the whole month of August (possibly even through the Labour Day weekend). In addition, this is an odd year, so it is a "Pink year", and the first of those have already started to show up. It is going to be a VERY busy and fishy summer.

I am beginning to get booked up during the middle of July (anglers in anticipation of some great "Trophy Chinook" fishing in upper Howe Sound), but I still have lots of open dates during this first week or so of July (including the upcoming US long weekend) since news of the Coho's arrival off West Vancouver hasn't really gotten out to the public yet (it happened after I had already submitted my newspaper columns).

that's why there's a warranty!
