A man has been arrested after shots were fired while Department of Fisheries and Oceans officers looked into complaints of an illegal shellfish operation.

Fisheries officers were investigating reports of illegal harvesting in Chemainus Friday afternoon when shots were fired, said the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP.

Several people fled.

Police later arrested Robert Wayne Guerin, 49, at his home near Chemainus. He has been charged with careless use of a firearm and unauthorized possession of a weapon.

A second suspect has turned himself in, said police.

Three others have also been arrested by DFO officers.

Nobody was injured.

This is a wake up call for fisheries officers. We're not in Kansas anymore. There is a different breed of folks out there and they don't value life.

Rightly so! Interesting they didn't mention what direction he was shooting and only charged him for careless use of a firearm. \
Shoudla been attempted murder of a Peace Officer.
