Navionics chip for Vancouver Island

I am toying with dropping the bucks on a Navionics chips and wanted to get some members to weigh in. I spend my time between Montana and Port Alberni and Navionics has a chip that covers the USA and Canada, which includes Vancouver Island for $199.00, and they have one just for Vancouver Island for $280.00.

The expensive one is their "Platinum", which I am assuming means more definition. I typically spend a month in the Barkley Sound every year, so it would be a good investment.

Your comments are greatly appreciated.

As far as I understand it, the VI Platinum does not have better definition or resolution but some extra features such as 3D view and area photos etc. If you are just in for the marine charts and contours I am sure you will be fine with the Navionic+R for USA and Canada ($199).

I think ericl means "Navionics + R(egions)" not Platinum +. The Navionics + R has the aforementioned contour detail and yes also the Sonar Charts that you can update with your own data.

Have any of you used the Sonar Charts Live feature? It looks very similar to what I've been doing on the Insight Genesis mapping but in real time which is a huge plus...

I played with it for a bit but soon turned it off because it just confuses you as you go. Not very useful the moment it build the new lines. Better to download and update after the trip to build a new map.

Hey guys, new on this forum but I am a Navionics Marine Specialist for WA/OR and BC. Feel free to direct any questions to me.

One of the easiest ways to see what your coverage will be is to visit navionics.com and click the Chart Viewer (like Eric posted earlier). It is free and kind of a "try it before you buy it" to see what the coverage will be for what waters are important to you. Again, it is free. Just make sure to click this little button to get the 1ft contours which are called Sonar Chart.

Yes it is really cool. I have been doing it for a few years with my iPad Navionics app connected to my HDS units. It's a cool feature

100% correct. The Platinum and Nav+ have the same 1ft contours. The Platinum has the sat overlay and 3D view, which are really cool. Just depends if those features are important to you.

With the Sonar Charts Live, does it save the contours for the next time you go so you don’t have to keep rebuilding an area? That’s what I liked so much about the Genesis mapping. If it has that feature I’m in!

Yes and no.

It will save your SonarChart layer on your graph with everything you recorded, but if you want it to be included with all of the other Navionics contours you will need to do it with the app.

A graph with wifi can be connected to your app (iphone/android/ipad) and then once you are back home and that app connects to wifi or cell data if will send data to Navionics automatically. Within a week or so it will update the Navionics data and when you update your card the map will have the updated info.

I have the Navionics + and decided to pull the pin on the C-Map MaxN+ for Vancouver Island. The contour lines on the C-Map are terrible compared to the Navionics. I asked for my money back but got no response.
