My wife's intro

Crafty, were you fishing for smallies when you hooked the largemouth? I have still had zero success with the soft plastics. All my catches have been off of Rapala crankbaits.
I know that the soft plastics work. Terry tells me so. And they look good, are rigged right but I guess I need more practice.

"Listen honey, I have to get out there fishing...... Exactly, they cost me some $$ but I have to use them to get better and make em worht it!"

Hey Lil' Q Dude,

Flyfishing for Bass is great. I typically use a black, white or red rabbit leeches tied with weedgaurds when fishing weedbeds. I love casting and fishing deer hair poppers and divers. The one thing to keep in mind is it takes a heavier line like a 7 or 8 wt. to cast the larger flies. Another thing I do is omit the tapered leader and use a 6' to 8'15 lb. maxima leader.
Use your rod tip to pop the fly just like using a lure and then strip the slack.

Here's to hoping you stick it to the Bass on the fly....

All the best,

Terry Skipper

Well guys I am taking her out again this afternoon on Shawnigan. Steve and I went yesterday and I persuaded her to come with me today cuz these smallmouth are really frustrating me.
The situation as far. I now have the ability to find em but can't make em bite. All the smallmouth we found seemed to be in 20'-24' of water holding about 3-5' off the bottom. Yeah, I have a fish finder....
I read and read and read. I use these tips for success but my neighbour has lost more big bass than I have caught. Yesterday he did the same again (as he ALWAYS does) used a floating crankbait with a weight and caught a few nice ones. I used plastic worms, jigs and crankbaits but only caught smaller ones.
Thankfully I see this as a challenge and am going to try some different presentations. I just need some better tackle, like a deep-diving minnow crankbait or some skirted jigs.
Wish us luck!

Hey Eric,

Perseverence will pay off.. Be patient! The reason your neighbour is catching them using a crankbait and weight is because he is suspending the lure in the strike zone. There is one sure way to catch these fish and that is using the drop shot method. Check it out in my rigging section. The hits are completely different. It is a matter of detecting a spongy or heaviness on your line. Do not be afraid to set the hook. If you have tubes or 4" Straight tail worms, they work well using this method. It is key to get your presentation on the bottom as fast as possible. Let it sit there and then slightly wiggle the rod tip to add action. When your lure is resting on the bottom, make sure you watch your line for any movement. Do not be afraid to set the hook on even the slightest sensation.
Another way to fish the depth is using a carolina rig with a 24 - 30" leader.
I look forward to seeing those pictures..
