'Mercan crab bait

Getting in on this game -- I've had success with the following:

- Any dead fish carcass (hali, salmon, rockfish etc)
- Horse Clams or Razor Clams (squished)
- Mussels growing on the side of the dock at the marina (squished)
- Chicken backs
- Turkey bones (half the price of chicken, but limited availability)
- Leftover meat forgotten at the back of the fridge (eeewwww)

I think the general rule is -- if it's meat and stinky <edit -- Oily>, crabs will go for it. Make it so that they can get at it -- but only when they enter the trap (i.e. tie it down).

I haven't had much luck with anything "stinky" or "freezer burnt". I must be doing something wrong! :)

I have a commercial crabbing friend, he does and says ... clams, hands down best

I saw a commercial crabber using geoducks once. The reason I knew it was geoducks was that he was throwing all the empty boxes overboard. :(

He also says fresh bait works best, not old stinky bait..... he runs 200pots , so is able to do the math[:0]

Well, according to Charlie White, Crabs don't like stinky, turned bait. Fresh is much better.

I have found that fresh Salmon heads work well when wired into the trap. I use a power drill and zap straps (wire ties) to secure them into the center of the trap.

Also, my brother who is a commercial crabber in the Gulf Islands uses Squid for bait, in addition to pellets.

I have done best with fresh Salmon heads Zap Strapped to the top and perhaps a can of Tuna or Salmon processed in oil with a couple of holes punched in the can....:) SS
