Heard about this being a possibility at a meeting the other night. The Albion test fishery numbers are high enough to take us out of a zone 1 conservation area and into a zone 2. There are 3 zones an area can fall into with 1 being the worst.

Not only is that great news for the JDF fishery that's great news for the early chinook stocks.

Yes heard as well just wasnt about to say things untill it was for sure...... the worst part about all of this we lost the JDF derby people cancelling marinas not filling up local businesses etc etc etc because DFO put the scare into many people from out of town and locally!!!!!!!!!! been fishing sooke now for 2 weeks and its like a ghost town this has hurt in more ways then one. I personally am going to write them another letter telling how displeased I am of them doing this to our local community.....

This good news for us local fisherman ( not for hire) I kind of like it on the quiet side.. but yes Wolfie, I can sympathise from a guide's perspective...

Fishery Notice - Fisheries and Oceans Canada

Subject: FN0489-Fraser River Spring 5-2 and Summer 5-2 Chinook: June 11th Abundance Update

In 2012, the Department has identified concerns associated with expected poor
returns of Spring 5-2 and Summer 5-2 chinook to the Fraser River. Management
of these stocks is based on an inseason assessment of returns using the
cumulative catch per unit effort (CPUE) of chinook at the Albion Test
Fishery. A three zone management approach is used to identify management
actions. Management actions for a return of less than 30,000 chinook to the
Fraser River (management zone 1) were planned pre-season based on the number of
spawners in the 2007 parental-generation (22,000 chinook) and the recent lower
than average return rates.

The model used to predict the returns of Spring 5-2 and Summer 5-2 chinook to
the Fraser River uses data from the standard chinook net at the Albion Test
fishery and does not use catch from the multi-panel net (which is currently
fished on alternating days). The standard chinook net is an 8 inch (approx.
20 cm) mesh.

The 2012 Albion chinook test fishery began operating on April 25th. A total of
five (5) chinook have been caught in the standard chinook net; an additional
eight (8) chinook have been caught in the multi-panel net. The CPUE input into
the model continues to be below the lower range of historical CPUE's used to
parameterize the model (1995 to 2010, excluding 2007). Based on the CPUE, for
the period May 6 to June 9, the current predicted return to the mouth of the
Fraser of Spring 5-2 and Summer 5-2 chinook in the aggregate ranges from 30,000
to 73,000 chinook (median of 47,060) or 86% probability of being in zone 2.
The model prediction indicates there is a 2% probability of returns to the
Fraser less than 30,000 (zone 1). Even if no further chinook are caught in the
Albion test fishery standard Chinook net prior to the final inseason update on
June 18th, the median predicted return to the mouth of the Fraser of Spring 5-2
and Summer 5-2 chinook would be 41,000 (zone 2).

Based on this inseason information, the Department is planning to implement
management actions associated with zone 2 (i.e. returns to the Fraser between
30 and 60 thousand chinook) for Fraser Spring 5-2 and Summer 5-2 chinook.
Management actions for specific areas will be confirmed by separate fishery
notices. The final inseason update is scheduled for June 18th and will be
provided for information purposes.

Fishery management actions to conserve Fraser River Spring 4-2 chinook continue
to remain in effect.

I also liked having Otter all too myself,i am happy for the Charter Guys and also the Derbys will be able to go ahead without having to eliminate someone who caught and kept a 86cm Fish and then call the authorities on them. Driller :) except for the Juan de Fuca Derby which is a crying Shame :(

It's not the 15th yet... they have two more days to F- it up. LOL
Also only lets us know what is happening from June 15- July 15. What then?
Most of us will assume we will be back to normal after but for out of towners booking trips this still sounds "unknown" for summer bookings.
If I am reading it right it is 1 over/ 1 under regardless whether it is clipped or not. That's new.

But of course this is good news!

Looking forward to fishing this weekend.

Fishery Notice - Fisheries and Oceans Canada

Subject: FN0496-Fraser River Spring Chinook-Areas 18, 19, 20 and 29 - Recreational Fishery Management Actions

In 2012, the Department has identified concerns associated with expected poor
returns of Spring 5-2 and Summer 5-2 chinook to the Fraser River. Management
actions for a return of less than 30,000 chinook to the Fraser River
(management zone 1) were planned pre-season based on the number of spawners in
the 2007 parental-generation (22,000 chinook) and the recent lower than average
return rates. Management of these stocks is based on an in-season assessment of
returns using the cumulative catch per unit effort (CPUE) of chinook at the
Albion Test Fishery, and is managed in three separate zones.
The resulting CPUE from the Albion Test Fishery for the period May 6 to June 9
is indicating that the current predicted return to the mouth of the Fraser of
Spring 5-2 and Summer 5-2 chinook ranges from 30,000 to 73,000 chinook

Based on this in-season information, the Department is planning to implement
management actions associated with zone 2 (returns to the Fraser between
30,000 -60,000) for Fraser Spring 5-2 and Summer 5-2 chinook.

Further to FN0380, the Department will be continuing with the "chinook
corridor" with actions similar to 2011 as Fraser River Spring and Summer
Chinook populations pass through the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the Fraser River
during June and early July. Details of these measures are outlined below.

1. Subareas 19-1 to 19-4, and 20-5.

Effective 00:01 hrs June 16, 2012 until 23:59 hrs July 15, 2012 the daily limit
is two (2) chinook salmon per day of which only one (1) chinook may be greater
than 67 cm. The minimum size limit in these areas is 45cm.

2. Subareas 18-1 to 18-6, 18-9, 18-11, 19-5, 19-6 and a portion of 29-4, and 29-
5 that lies south from a point on the east side of Valdes Island located at
49.05.562N/123.39.989W then extending 57 degrees True for 5 nautical miles to a
point at 49.08.316N/123.33.669W.

Effective 00:01 hrs June 16, 2012 until 23:59 hrs July 15, 2012 the daily limit
is two (2) chinook salmon per day of which only one (1) chinook may be greater
than 67 cm. The minimum size limit in these areas is 62cm.

One thing we need to do is give Chris Bos and the SFAB, and The outfitters boys, martin(peddar bay) and tourism Vic. big kudos in pushing DFO and making calls etc they worked hard behind the scences I am most assured as they are big voices, we really need to thanks them all via e-mail or in person.

Next step i think is we need to be better organized and come together and do the process of playing the game with the government best said as "UNITED AS ONE" WE dodged a big bullet this time.

Thanks again

Wolf

It's happening Roy...

Mr. Bos and cut plug did something else that I feel that I can not mention(cause I aint letting the cat out), but feel it helped.

There not basing this model on 13 fish?

There not basing this model on 13 fish?

DFO is basing their model on 5 salmon. Not the ones from the multi panel net.
