You may want to be cautious buying boats from the US over the next few years. There will be a lot of Insurance write off boats sold at auction dirt cheep and fixed up to look nice and run (sort of). Sometimes there will be boats that were not written off but still sunk and people will want to get them running and get rid of them before the problems start. Some of them will be tempting as they will be newer with newer motors and may look good. They can often get the salt water out of the motors and get them running and clean up the worst of the corroded electric connections but unless the motors, wiring and electrics are replaced they will have problems even if the hulls are good. It is not like a motor on a boat here which gets flooded with salt water and goes to a professional immediately for a tear down and cleaning before the corrosion sets in. These motor will spend a lot of time in the salt and then in the air corroding metal and electrics, causing lingering problems and failures.

On the other hand if you know what you are buying, got a good hull and trailer dirt cheap and were prepared to re-power and rewire it with new electrics, you may be OK.

Yup-and some will be 'laundered' through dealers in the US Midwest and sold as used 'freshwater' boats.

There were rumors that some Katrina boats were fixed up, loaded on freighters and shipped out of country.

It occurs to me there may be a lot of used motors for sale and parts on Ebay etc.
