GPS not working

I have an older Magellan GPS (1999) with an external receiver. It works fine on a clear day but if it is foggy it will not get a fix on any sat signal. Its the foggy days when you really need it. Anyone have any ideas , maybe time to upgrade,

I have an older Garmin chartplotter/gps (bought in 2006) that just didn't seem to lock on. I called Garmin yesterday and spoke with a techie. He said it was most likely an update issue. Mine was years behind. Told me to get an SD chip card and then went through the steps to download an update then load that into my Garmin unit. Haven't done it yet since I have to do this on a PC and I have a MAC. But, the dude sounded very confident it was just an update issue and said it would find the sats much faster and easier.
Not sure if you have update capability on the Magellan, a call to the support line would be my next step.
