Elk Lake Carp

The Carp, Perch and American Bullfrog were introduced by some idiots, the same goes for the Smallmouth bass but mind you that was in the early 1900's. Actually most of us are in favor of the Bass. Rumor has it the Perch were introduced as feed for the Blackwater rainbow trout, the Bullfrogs were a food experiment gone wrong

Yes I know SammyS.

Three of the many species around the world introduced by man before anyone understood the devastating ecological impacts of introduced species. (Although yellow perch are bit different as they are native to the Peace river system) Approximately half the indigenous species native to small islands around the world have been wiped out by introduced cats, dogs and rats. And as for the impact of the rabbit on Australia...well 'nuff said.

Despite this track record of introduced species a friendly Norwegian company near you is happily introducing thousands of Atlantic salmon into BC waters.....another "food experiment gone wrong" if ever there was one!!

Why is Corn Illegal to Use as Fishing Bait?

Corn Works Very Well, so Why is it Not Allowed?

Trout are a top caliber sport fish, no matter the sub-species they more often than not give the fisherman a great fight, as long as the gear the fisherman is using is not overrated. Fishing for 5-pound brown trout with a 20-pound weight class rod and reel set up with 40 pound test line is not exactly sport fishing. It is more akin to reeling in dead weight. For the safety of the trout, or other sport fish species, and the sincerity of the sport, or art, of fishing are why the use of corn is illegal for fishing in some States and Provinces.
Many sport fish, like bass, catfish, pickerel and trout, will eat kernels of corn, making it a very attractive bait for people who just care about catching something, not the sport, just the meal. But corn is very bad for sport fish, and can cause major stomach problems and even death when ingested. Corn swells up when inside a fish's stomach, causing blockages within their digestive system. And, corn has no nutritional value for sport fish like trout or pickerel, so if the trout nibbles the corn kernel(s), and gets away, it could have a painful death awaiting it, due to the bait that you offered it.

The worst possible thing that you could do would be to chum the area that you are fishing with a can of corn, or even ears of corn. It is much like throwing a handful of worms into a creek's long, deep pool, and returning to fish with worms the next day. The fish eat the worms, then are tricked into believing it is a safe meal, and when you fish the pool with worms, it turns into a feeding frenzy. But worms are a good meal for sport fish, whereas if you use corn for chumming, many fish could die.

Fishing is supposed to be fun, with the fight being the best part of the trip. We don't use flashlights at night, because that's cheating (and against many State's and Province's regulations), nor do we throw dynamite into a lake and scoop up the fish that end up floating on the surface. And, we don't use corn as bait, because if the fish eats the offered kernel, it could be fatal for the fish, or, as they say in New Jersey, the fish could end up swimming with the fishes.

There are many ways to cheat the fishing rules and regulations as set out by the Department of Game, Fish and Parks. When a fisherman, usually people who illegally fish and sell their catches to restaurants, gets caught breaking these rules, major fines and the loss of fishing privileges for many years, and up to a life-time fishing ban can be levied.

Using corn to fish falls into the categories of using whatever works the easiest to catch fish, and just downright lazy fishing. Neither of them would endear the fisherman to other, more responsible fisherman. Using corn to fish is very much like feeding bread to geese. It works, they come close or take the bait, but it is very bad for the fish or bird, and the bird's young could be at risk as well if they are still dependent upon their mothers for sustenance.

Please fish smart, and fish responsibly.

Same could be said for those that use Powerbait(and the like), soft plastic/metal lures, flies, lead weights, hooks...fishing line...I could go on.
I thought all fisherman were smart & responsible ;)

Is corn illegal here?

Is corn illegal here?

Corn is not. However chumming, with anything, is.

The article posted above, not sure of it's origin but it seems to be written by the "elite" fisherman looking down on those below him...just cause he can, maybe they get some sort of perverted satisfaction from it.(oh and thanks for the fishing lesson ;) )
I fished for trout/bass with typical trout/bass lures/baits for 4 days caught next to nothing before switching to a carp set up with corn on hooks and when I did I caught carp. No trout or bass or any other species.
If you are targeting trout/bass, clearly, corn is not the way to go.

Many of the trout in "stocked lakes" are not conditioned to eat totally natural food. They were raised on marine fast-food......McTrout Nuggets.

So they are pre-conditioned to eat Powerbait and the like.

Just like so many of these "old fisherman's tales", this one is plain rubbish and just an urban legend. There is no evidence that corn can harm trout or any other fish. There are several posts like this article on many U.S. based fishing threads and thinking people call them out (just check Google).

http://www.fish.state.pa.us/images/pages/qa/fish_regs/corn_chum.htm

Carp eat (and are caught all the time) on corn in U.K. and in many waters ground baiting (chumming) is also allowed. They guy who wrote this article has got all confused with urban legends, local state fishing laws (which may or may not have some rational basis) and chumming.

Must be a fly-fisherman ;)

On the corn topic....... Hahha lol
Are the fish not tricked In to believing that after all the insects they consume up until the point that they fall victim to our offering that it was going to be safe???? C'mon people ..... Are we not anglers. I understand the levels associated with angling and the enjoyment of the outdoors and yammer yammer yammer, but I want to catch fish. Otherwise....... Golf? Perhaps?

Give it up. If corn works to catch a few off the bat then so be it.

Like the old adage suggests:

Catch a fish
Catch many fish
Catch a large fish
Catch many large fish
Catch a fish in a difficult manner
Catch many fish in a difficult manner
Catch a large fish In a difficult manner
Catch many large fish in a difficult manner.

We are all at different levels. No one level is superior. It's relative to ones enjoyment.

Its good to have highlights back in the fresh section
