Comments on the Halibut RIAS Needed!

December 11, 2012

What a great conference!

Last Thursday, guides, lodge operators and representatives of a host of other business converged on the River Rock Resort to attend the annual Sport Fishing Industry Policy Conference. While we expected a good turnout, we were pleasantly surprised at the numberthat attended. Attendees heard presentations on the 2013 salmon outlook, catch monitoring, First Nations' increasing participation in the sport fishery and what we can expect for halibut in 2013. The consensus seems to be that we had a great conference.

If you follow the links below or visit the Events section of the SFI website, you can read some of the conference presentations.

After the conference, more than 250 people came out to enjoy an evening of food, drink and auctions at the Big Splash gala fundraiser. The venue was excellent and the participation was outstanding. Thanks again to all those who took to the time to come out and support the SFI.

Your Important Input Requested - regarding the Experimental Halibut Licence RIAS

On the business front, we'd like to take this opportunity to encourage everybody to submit their feedback to DFO on its plans for the halibut pilot project. As you know, DFO wants to expand the pilot leasing program, and we have been asking questions about whether it makes sense to allow some anglers to fish outside the normal season, how it plans to monitor program participants and whether it has the resources to administer yet another new program. If you follow this link to the Issues section of the SFI website, you'll find some of the many issues you've raised about this program as a reference. Your opinions matter and we encourage you to write to DFO by December 21 as they complete their information gathering process, the Regulatory Impact analysis statement or RIAS.

Tidal Angling Guide (TAG) Application - now available!

We also want to remind guides and lodge operators that the CTAG Challenge Program is up and running. Those experienced guides who meet all the requirements of the CTAG program are encouraged to take advantage of the program and get their certification this winter. Tax incentives are still in place, a refundable tax credit is made available on completetion of the certification. Details available here: CTAG Requirements

Happy Holidays!

The holidays are nearly upon us. We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you and your families the best this holiday season.

We look forward to talking to you again in the New Year.

Tight Lines!
