My buddy is looking at a used one at the moment and it comes with a 200 Optimax. I am assuming it is the 2002 Hull type which has a max HP rating of 175HP. I am not familiar with the insurance issues you would have if you have a boat that is over the hulls max HP.

Anyone able to enlighten me at all?

I would be upfront and have it in writing that they know about it.

Slimey insurance companies love an out.

Good policy to let insurance know up front. Remember, hull plate engine ratings in Canada are derived from a simple geometric formula related to waterline length, deadrise and beam (Transport Canada website has it). They have nothing to do with the transom's strength or lack thereof. Two boats from different builders with similar hull dimensions will have the same rating regardless of transom design and construction. The formula doesn't care about inboard or outboard either.
