2017 Sidney Reports

Special Father's day trip for me today. Took my 81 yr old dad out and got him one legal for the BBq and one exactly 85cm. The big one was a white spring, both on herring strip off Hambley. Glad it was 85cm would of been hard to tell him we have to let it go especially since it swallowed the hook into it's gills.

I'm fairly certain you could have kept it if over 85cm in 19-5....

Notes:

Barbless hooks are required when fishing for salmon in tidal and non-tidal
waters of British Columbia.

The term "hatchery marked" means a fish that has a healed scar in place of the
adipose fin.

Sport anglers are encouraged to participate in the voluntary Salmon Sport Head
Recovery program by labelling and submitting heads from adipose fin-clipped
chinook and coho salmon. Recovery of coded-wire tags provides critical
information for coast-wide stock assessment. Contact the Salmon Sport Head
Recovery Program at (866) 483-9994 for further information.

Rockfish Conservation Areas that are currently in effect and are closed to all
fin fishing. Descriptions of these closures, and other recreational fishing
information, can be found on the Internet at:

www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/recfish

Did you witness suspicious fishing activity or a violation? If so, please call
the Fisheries and Ocean Canada 24-hour toll free Observe, Record, Report line
at (800) 465-4336.

I may be wrong but this is what has been sent around. It was order number 0544. I was in area 19-5
You would think you could at least keep hatchery. Turn in the heads is what they want us to do so they can make proper decisions on fish management.

Got out for a quick fish this afternoon once the wind settles down. A quick pass at Wain rock and no love so moved on to the Spit. Trolled for for 45 mins without a bite until it got quite cabbagey out there....so switched to jigging. About 20 mins in....Whammo! An 84.5cm 20 lb hatch. Fish went bucky and got airborne a few times. Lucky there were no seals around.IMG_20170620_184824.jpg

Short jig at the powder wharf last night 530-7. Released one about 8lbs.
What kind of depth do you jig in? Thinking I might give it a whirl at some point. I see a lot of boats in tight and wondered how shallow they are fishing.

On the fishery site when they mention maximum fish size 85 cm... for hatchery they say 'Oversize Length' and for wild they say 'Maximum size' ... is there a difference?

What hatchery stocks are they trying to protect? lol

Tried Fairfax yesterday morning. 8am - 2pm. Caught 2 dogfish. I threw everything down: anchovies, hootchies, spoons and didn't get a bite. Saw lots of bait and a few arches on the sounder but couldn't trick any salmon.

Exactly the same report for me today from Mandarte Island to Hambley Point. Huge Bait balls throughout the column surface boiling in spots, lots of arches and a couple small jumpers (early pinks?). Nothing at all for us though.

Is there still a closure in 18-6 related to Cowichan Chinook return. Cant seem to find anything in Regs on mobile phone? If so what dates? Thx

We got skunked at the bluffs in the morning yesterday, and skunked again at Coal Is. in the afternoon. Couldn't even scrounge up a keeper sized ling at my usual spot. Nice day though...
