2016 Nootka Sound/Esperanza Inlet Fishing Reports

Eh....any reports? I am heading up Wednesday for a couple days.
two jack springs and a 15 lb northern yesterday - all caught at rosa and in front of centre island. saw fish being caught at birthday channel. would think there would be fish at saltery but have yet to catch anything there after 5 plus attempts.

Way to go John and Cathy-I know you guys won't post this but from my visit last fall to the hatcheries and rivers I know how much this money you raised for fish enhancement means. It looks like it will be needed more than ever this year-so once again Thank you from an ordinary guy who realizes how much work you both do for the resource. Sorry for giving you free advertising ---but you both deserve it!!

Yes, congrats to all involved.

Well it's back to work today which means my boat is put away for the season. I'll give a little wrap up report.

Last week we had 2 days of some of the best spring fishing of the summer. 5 boats limited out on nice size springs at Burdwood/Escalante so all you can think is it's finally on. The fish have moved in and the saying better late than never comes to mind. But NOOOOOOOO, the next day 5 boats fishing for a few hours caught 1 spring. That seems to be the way it's been most of the year with no long stretches of time when the fish hang out and bite for very long.

I had three groups that wanted bottom fish so it worked out very well having the winds down and able to get offshore.

We let a 150# + halibut go as it was toooooo big. The guy had it 10 feet from the top and it went back down to the bottom.

Thanks a lot SpringFever/Mike
Yes the Derby went extremely well!! It takes a lot more people than Cathy & I. Thanks to the Folks who put in Hundreds of hour to make the annual event Successful. Let us not forget the many volunteers who work tirelessly at their Volunteer Hatcheries & River/Stream rehabilitation projects. This is where the rubber really meets the road. "YES - It Really is ALL About the FISH"

We are getting LOTS of rain over the past 4 days. 5,000+ Chinook in the Conuma, 2,500+ in the bay in front of the Canton and a large school also under the bridge.
Chinook & Coho showing in the Tahsis & Liener Rivers. Fresh Salmon showing in Esperanza Daily. Heard Good reports from Burdwood.
Keep your/our fingers crossed this all may workout.

Rumour Has IT!!!

Yes there is lots of speculation that for a variety of reasons there are still lots of Springs/Chinook/Kings still on their way into Nootka Sound and Esperanza Inlet.

Well Maybe BUT, here is what we Know for SURE!!!

Thursday afternoon the outside waters went flat. Literally every boat that went outside Thursday and Friday loaded up on Springs. Today, Saturday most vessels headed outside. Today’s forecast is for 1 meter seas with 18 second wave period “FLAT-FLAT”. This is the Pacific West Coast so always check the marine weather forecast before going off shore. The next several days look GOOD!

Two Good site to check weather are:

1) Windfinder Estevan Point & South Brooks Buoy 2) Weather.gc.ca/marine-Vancouver Island South & North

Danny with a 17.5 lb Coho in his right hand and a 21 lb Spring on the

left. Both caught on anchovies at 32 ft in Esperanza Inlet near

Double Island 2 days ago.

Grady & Kayla Lancasterwith their morning catch 13.5,

14 & 15 Cohos. Caught near Center Island, Esperanza

Bottom line is: there are lots of Chinook on the outside & there lots of Coho & Chinook in Esperanza Inlet.

Where are all on the outside going? The answer is we do NOT know. What we do know is many of the fish have mature eggs but more than half are still green. You make your own conclusions.

We also Know: that All the rivers that we have personally had opportunity to visit in the last few days and others that DFO have reported on have the vanguard of the Chinook runs in them. These rivers include the Conuma, Canton, Sucwoa, Gold, Burman, Tahsis & Leiner. This is all GOOD NEWS for stock escapement.

Halibut are still in Good Abundance in outside water. The Hali are basically in same off shore areas as the springs. So when you leave the Marina have what you need for BOTH!!

Cathy with her & husband Kims Halibut catch yesterday Sept.2 at the Pins.

The boat limited on 23- 38lb Halibut. Marline wanted to make sure we knew " She caught the big one."

Just got back from Esperanza. Fished Wed and Thursday inside, at Rosa and Garden Point/Saltery Bay - very slow. Lots of jack springs and not much else. Never saw any landing nets. Ran offshore on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and had great fishing for coho and springs. Limited out on hatchery coho (released many, many wilds) and springs. Great trip. But again, unless you are able to go offshore, you won't be catching much.

I still don't understand why that fishery seems to shut down the last week of August. If there are fish there in Sept even if they are off shore..... why don't they extend into the end of Sept? I'm sure people like me and my buddies would be there as regulars. Love a good Fall fish....

Westview is still open-which is really where the fish are-haven't seen any reports of anything off Bajo!

Thanks for the reports, going to head up tomorrow for one last trip. When I was up in the first part of Aug the FN gal at the gold river ramp said that they were going to start work on the ramp in Sept and it would be closed, any recent reports or intel would be appreciated. Thanks

I was at the launch on Monday (Sept 5). Sign said Marina (I take that word with a grain of salt) closed on Sept 6. Fellow behind me told me that they were going to start repairs this week and the launch would not be useable (i.e. closed), which is why he was taking his boat out now. He seemed to know what he was talking about. Prior to embarking to GR, may want to do some further research.

According to postings Tue & Wed this week by Mowachaht Muchalaht First Nation on Facebook:
"Gold River Boat Ramp Update (Tuesday). Construction has been delayed until approx. Sept 16 or 17. We intend to maintain at least one lane open for small craft. Notice will be provided as the work proceeds and as any new changes are made available to us."
"Gold River Boat Ramp Update (Wednesday) We have been in communication with the pile driving vessel and they have now given us an updated commencement of work for the week starting Monday September 19, 2016."

Last week they reported:
"The ramp will be unavailable to smaller vessels during high tides when the pile-driver barge comes in to do their work. During mid to low tides the barge will back out and smaller craft will be able to use the ramp."
