2-Stroke Rebuild How difficult or how Much?

Anyone have experience with doing a rebuild? Have you done it yourself, is it difficult? Are there shop manuals to use? What kind of shop do you get the cylinders re-bored? Where can you buy pistons, rods etc?

What might it cost to get a shop to do the whole thing?

The motor in question is a '91 115hp Yamaha, v6 I believe. Current diagnosis is one cylinder with low compression, and there is a little bit of movement on the piston.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Usually it's not worth doing, I've never done it but know people who have. If you are going to bore it, you need to send the block to a two stroke specialist like Mongoose in Vancouver, otherwise, more often then not, KA-BOOM. The motor is only worth a couple grand in mint shape, so I don't think it makes sense economoically. Besides, getting stainless bolts out of old aluminium can be fun, you may break a whole bunch off.

It's really not anything like putting a ring and gut kit in a small Chevy, I don't know if I would bother. And don't forget, the rest of the motor is still 16 years old.

ive done many. The first thing to do is tear it down and inspect, measure etc... If you have any questions, Id be glad to help. Where are you?

I'm in the lower mainland. I don't own this motor, I was looking at a used boat, and was wondering if there was a deal to be had with a little DIY. I like taking things apart and learning how they work. ;)

Shortly after I made the post, someone else scooped it.

Thanks for the advice guys.

Cheers.
