The Victoria Joint Rescue Coordination Centre came to the rescue of a couple after a fire broke out on their sail boat near Poets Cove at Pender Island last night.

The husband and wife were refueling an alcohol stove when it burst into flames around 7 p.m.

The man was on fire and had to jump in the water to put himself out, Coast Guard officer Robert Bennett said.

His body was badly burned and his wife suffered burns to her hands and face.

Several boaters in the area sent out a mayday and the rescue centre tasked several coast guard boats and HMCS Brandon to rescue the couple.

The two were air lifted to hospital by helicopter and are recovering.

Their 32-foot sail boat is tied in Bedwell Harbour until their family can pick it up.

“We get at least one or two stove-type fires a year,” Bennett said.

Take only what you need.

Probably ran out of fuel while cooking, turned it off and dumped some fuel in some spilled hit a hot burner and that's all she wrote.

Never did like alcohol stoves too balky not enough heat and just overall a PITA.
