Out today for an early start at Hamley with a few other boats. Kept one pink. Lost a small one. Saw two boats land two low teen springs. Then headed out for Halibut but caught too many dogs so packed it in after lunch. As usual, springs are out there in Sidney, just not in numbers.
Went out today for halibut. About to drop anchor and realized I forgot the hooks, spreader bars, etc in my garage. So off to troll for salmon we went. Out at Constance fishing along the anchored freighters. Lost one, one small released, and one 8lb hatch keeper. Nice day and quite a few boats...
We fished Bamfield last week Monday to Thursday. It was slow. Short time at the Wall for one coho and then the majority of the time at Gibraltor and Swale Rock where we picked up the rest of our fish. Fished with three other boats about 11 hours each day. 4 fish was the most out boats were able...
Hamley was good to us yesterday. 14 lb at 0930 then a 5 lb that was released easily. Went back again today but just two shakers. Moved to Coal at tide change but no love. Only a few boats out.
Out today for a short solo fish. 0730-0930 at Hamley. After 3 shakers from the same spot, landed a 14 lb’er. Skinny G at 48’. Just myself and one other boat out, which was a nice change from busy Sooke, as was the 5 minute drive home compared to an hour.
Fished 0800-1400 mainly between Aldridge and Creyke. 4 springs around 22, 12, 8 and 8. All released well and all wild. Couple we lost maybe pinks. Spoons on riggers between 45-70ft.
Out at Coal today with one other boat. 7-11. Trolled around in the strong current and caught a 20+ lb hatchery chinook near the marker. Peeled out a ton of line. Brought to the boat and helped it regain its strength for about 5 minutes. Swam off nicely. One of the largest fish I've caught. After...
Fished Hamley 9-11. Then tried powder wharf for about 15 minutes but there was salad everywhere. Finally tried up and down the spit until 3. No success save for a couple of feeder springs. Was like fishing in a bathtub. Only a couple of boats out trying the same today.
Socks out in 400-500 ft off Secretary fishing with the fleet this morning. Bite was from about 7-10. Red glow tip squirt with red flashers at 61’ was the ticket. Tried Otter for Springs until 1 but no luck.
Fished yesterday 6-11. 3 fat sockeye landed near Secretary, one on a Peetz Holy Roller and the rest on the common red squirt. Lost another 3. Tried for springs but no love.
Out yesterday 10-1. Landed a just undersized spring just out from the Sidney Island dock that was nicely released. Nothing else for the day. A wee lumpy so headed in. Missed the whale show.
Fished Tuesday from 1230-1830 all along the bluffs. One spring released just under the slot and then lost a decent one after a minute battle. Nothing else but some shakers, flat waters and some rain. About 5 other boats fishing but didn't see any fish caught.
Straight to shack this morning and picked up a mid size pink. Trolled over to Secretary but no luck except some shakers. Trolled back toward shack and landed a 10#. A few minutes later trolling closer through the trap got into a feisty 12# that popped the clip ripped some line. No flasher so...
Fished Hamely yesterday from 8-12. Two springs, one of which was a 12 lb'er. Both caught around 90 feet on AP spoon with moon jelly flasher. Saw one other fish caught near us and that was about it.
Was out today fishing near Saltspring..then just an hour trolling around the Spit. Saw one nice spring caught by a boat in front of us. Nothing for us though.
