    Vancouver Island Outboard Dealers

Live in Nanaimo, and take both Yamaha and Suzuki motors over the hump to Port Alberni. Port Boat House and Breakers. Both have provided excellent service. Tried Parker Marine originally for a number of services and the quality of service was poor. Felt like we were a nuisance. We weren’t asking...

Southern Resident Whales - New Study Released Nature, Extinction in 75-100 years

Can't you guys see they are helping the whales!? They have their best interest at heart! That is a transient. The boat is making as much noise as possible around the whale to create an auditory smoke screen, allowing it to get closer to the seals. It's a new ENGO-approved seal cull method, but...

    Ocean Steelhead

I think this is a good example of how rare it is. 2 in 50 years, one back in the 70s, a handful among all the lodge boats in Haida Gwaii (1000s of boat days), a couple kelts in the N SoG. Seems pretty rare and not remotely impactful relative to the commercial gillnet fisheries referenced and of...

Concerns about herring kills at B.C. fish farms

And a lot more evidence has been developed to show the effective transfer of pathogens across the wild and farmed fish.

Big Fish - Big Spoons or Plugs?

OK, match the hatch seems to be the biggest general point. But, a hypothetical situation. You are taking part in a derby. You don't know what location is going to be chosen for the derby. You have to choose the lures (no bait) before you know where you are fishing, and you can't change those...

    construction-of-fish-trap-on-the-campbell-river-to-begin-this-summer

The nets have a small mesh diameter and are strung tight, essentially acting like a wall for the fish, but allowing the water to flow past. So there's no chance of entanglement with this type of rigging. They swim up, then move laterally until they enter the collection and sorting area. Yes...

Big Fish - Big Spoons or Plugs?

Curious to hear everyone's thoughts on whether they prefer using larger spoons or plugs if they are targeting larger fish. The old adage of "big bait = big fish" still holds true for gear, but do you like spoons or plugs more? Obviously, cut plugs are the go-to method for the largest fish on the...

    Springs Rebound

https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/west-coast/science-data/ocean-conditions-indicators-trends We've not seen favourable conditions like the last 4 years since, 2007-2010. But add the variable ocean conditions that are continuing to increase the ocean-type Chinook productivity, as @searun said, and...

Projects examine how rec fishery is affecting salmon.

Exactly. I understand @terrin's concerns. But we know what the status quo has got us. More restrictions. Dead end to the fishery. Looking for solutions to decrease the fishery impact (like catch-and-release practices) needs to be a continued priority. Or we will continue to follow the same path...

    40th bday charter/lodge ideas?

It really depends on what you want for the experience and what "decent" fish means to you. Those dates are primetime everywhere on the coast - you may always run into a dreaded cold streak, but that can happen anywhere and really shouldn't be accounted for. Do you want to go somewhere with few...

Projects examine how rec fishery is affecting salmon.

Can you elaborate? Science is science and the results are the results. How those are used by management is a different story. But those working in the field are simply collecting data. What are you doing to help advance the fishery?

    Boat Camping

This is a great little anchorage. Not as tight as it looks once you're in there. Have been in there with 5 or 6 other boats.

    Auto PFDs

Majority of the flotation is in the chest so they keep you face up. But there is no collar to provide extra support for the head and neck.

    Auto PFDs

The Khimeras are great! Super comfortable and the pocket on the front allows for a few basic tools while fishing. Plus a little added warmth on those cool days, but they never feel overly hot either with your neck fully free. 10/10 would recommend.

    Islander MR-3 or TR-3?

MR3s have served me well for 15 years. Better reel for mooching. If you plan to primarily mooch, then I’d suggest going with those. And they will fish well in all other situations.

    28-4 sponge reef closures

Based on the regs you can fish downriggers in there. Winter chinook are generally found near structure so fishing near the bottom is usually best. I'd suggest fishing outside of the closure regardless of the regulation, especially if targeting bottom dwelling winters. Both from the perspective...
