Good news for land based fish farms and commercial fishermen.

Norwegian Salmon Prices Are Going Wild

The market is also being squeezed from the supply side. Production is taking longer than expected to recover after a disastrous 2016, when salmon stocks around the world were devastated by parasitic sea lice, including in top producer Norway, while toxic “red tide” algae blooms killed millions of fish in Chile, the second-largest supplier.

This year, cold Norwegian waters meant salmon ate less and stayed smaller, said Nikolik. Chilean farmers have also harvested fish earlier because of concerns about more algae blooms, he said.

A weak start to Alaska’s
salmon run, when wild fish migrate to the upper reaches of rivers to spawn, is also adding to supply concerns, according to Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Alvin Tai.

What will be the Fish Farm license renewal decision be?
"On June 20th, the BC Government will decide whether or not to renew the leases of 20 parasite-infested salmon farms located on critical wild salmon migration routes. And from behind the scenes, we are hearing that Premier John Horgan and the BC NDP government are waffling.
It is not yet clear they are going to make the right decision...
Call your MLA now and let them know: we want diseased open-net salmon farms gone from our coast!
Please do your part by making a call today!"

And from behind the scenes, we are hearing that Premier John Horgan and the BC NDP government are waffling.

Not surprising in the media they are starting to be portrayed as the anti jobs and pro tax party. Its unlikely that we will see land based fish farm without huge government intervention and subsides. Spending millions on fish farm land based infrastructure when that money could be put to use on health care, education ect.. is also very unlikely. Without a relocation strategy you will be asking them to kill jobs and that the route to political suicide. You can't even say that if you remove fish farms that you will generate X number of more jobs in recreational or commercial fisheries.

Call your MLA now and let them know: we want diseased open-net salmon farms gone from our coast!
Please do your part by making a call today!"

This is the hill to die on if you want any progress in the next few years then stopping the leases is the chance to do it. Every single member that has been anti fish farm and posted in this thread should be taking the time to phone and write their MLA.

I will send an email to Horgan again. If he waffles on moving the Farms out of the Broghton I'm out and will be looking for Porportionate Representation to make my vote count. What is his office number?

Abstract: Piscine orthoreovirus (PRV-1) causes heart and skeletal muscle inflammation (HSMI) in
farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Recently, a novel PRV (formerly PRV-Om, here called PRV-3),
was found in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) with HSMI-like disease. PRV is considered to be
an emerging pathogen in farmed salmonids. In this study, molecular and antigenic characterization
of PRV-3 was performed. Erythrocytes are the main target cells for PRV, and blood samples that
were collected from experimentally challenged fish were used as source of virus. Virus particles
were purified by gradient ultracentrifugation and the complete coding sequences of PRV-3 were
obtained by Illumina sequencing. When compared to PRV-1, the nucleotide identity of the coding
regions was 80.1%, and the amino acid identities of the predicted PRV-3 proteins varied from
96.7% (1) to 79.1% (3). Phylogenetic analysis showed that PRV-3 belongs to a separate cluster.
The region encoding 3 were sequenced from PRV-3 isolates collected from rainbow trout in Europe.
These sequences clustered together, but were distant from PRV-3 that was isolated from rainbow trout
in Norway. Bioinformatic analyses of PRV-3 proteins revealed that predicted secondary structures and
functional domains were conserved between PRV-3 and PRV-1. Rabbit antisera raised against purified
virus or various recombinant virus proteins from PRV-1 all cross-reacted with PRV-3. Our findings
indicate that despite different species preferences of the PRV subtypes, several genetic, antigenic,
and structural properties are conserved between PRV-1 and-3.

Abstract
Background: Heart and skeletal muscle inflammation (HSMI) is an emerging disease of marine-farmed Atlantic
salmon Salmo salar, first recognized in 1999 in Norway, and recently associated with piscine orthoreovirus (PRV)
infection. To date, HSMI lesions with presence of PRV have only been described in marine-farmed Atlantic salmon
in Norway. A new HSMI-like disease in rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss associated with a PRV-related virus has
also been reported in Norway.
Methods: Sampling of Atlantic salmon and coho salmon was done during potential disease outbreaks, targeting
lethargic/moribund fish. Fish were necropsied and tissues were taken for histopathologic analysis and testing for
PRV by RT-qPCR assay for segment L1 and conventional RT-PCR for PRV segment S1. The PCR products were
sequenced and their relationship to PRV strains in GenBank was determined using phylogenetic analysis and
nucleotide and amino acid homology comparisons.
Results: The Atlantic salmon manifested the classical presentation of HSMI with high PRV virus loads (low Ct values)
as described in Norway. The coho salmon with low Ct values had myocarditis but only in the spongy layer, the
myositis of red muscle in general was mild, and the hepatic necrosis was severe. Upon phylogenetic analysis of PRV
segment S1 sequences, all the Chilean PRV strains from Atlantic salmon grouped as sub-genotype Ib, whereas the
Chilean PRV strains from coho salmon were more diversified, grouping in both sub-genotypes Ia and Ib and others
forming a distinct new phylogenetic cluster, designated Genotype II that included the Norwegian PRV-related virus.
Conclusions: To our knowledge the present work constitutes the first published report of HSMI lesions with
presence of PRV in farmed Atlantic salmon outside of Europe, and the first report of HSMI-like lesions with presence
of PRV in coho salmon in Chile
. The Chilean PRV strains from coho salmon are more genetically diversified than
those from Atlantic salmon, and some form a distinct new phylogenetic cluster, designated Genotype II.

We used to have a lot of Coho Salmon in the SOG up until the early 90's around the same time the Fish Farms arrived. An infected Wild Salmon is a meal for its predator so not suprising to see the Fish Farm promoters claim Aarskog: ...but we haven’t found a wild salmon with a disease that came from farmed salmon, yet.

Sea Shepherd Vessel MARTIN SHEEN detained in Victoria
https://www.facebook.com/SeaShepher...053622651183/1797848340238365/?type=3&theater

The Sea Shepherd U.S. flagged sailing vessel MARTIN SHEEN is being detained in Victoria, British Columbia. Canadian Customs has refused to grant clearance despite advanced notice of the arrival of the vessel from Honolulu, Hawaii.

U.S. citizen Captain Chris Holt has been detained and his passport removed from the vessel by custom officers. The other 7 crew are American and Canadian plus one Polish and one French citizen. They have all been cleared. The captain and the vessel have not been cleared.

Sea Shepherd Director of Operations Locky MacLean is appearing at Customs HQ in Victoria in court this morning for a hearing on the manner.

Customs asked if Dr. Alexandra Morton would be coming onboard. They also informed Sea Shepherd that there was no need for any research regarding the salmon farms because the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans already does research.

The MARTIN SHEEN has been in B.C. waters every summer for the last three years and not once has the vessel or crew been in violation of any Canadian laws. The sole motivation for the MARTIN SHEEN being in B.C. waters is to assist Dr. Alexandra Morton and her independent research into the transmission of salmon parasites and viruses. The campaign is Operation Virus Hunter.

It appears that the denial of entry is politically motivated.
Will the Canadian government deny this independent research by Sea Shepherd and Dr. Morton?

Dr. Alexandra Morton is asking if this has anything to do with the fact that she is studying the spread of piscine reovirus to wild salmon from BC farm salmon, as the Canadian Minister of Fisheries is fighting two lawsuits to allow infected fish into BC farms, while in Washington State, transfer of farm fish infected with this virus is prohibited.

I had a bunch of Facebook friends get turned away at the US border when they were planning to go protest the pipeline down south.

is the Martin Sheen and Alexandra Morton going to be involved in active protests? If so the border agency has the right to refuse entry

My understanding from the news is that the Martin Sheen has been bought up as part of the occupy fish farms campaign not science.

Do you guys see the significance of this??
Who would believe IN CANADA one of our customs employees would consider this question and comment to be acceptable??
"Customs asked if Dr. Alexandra Morton would be coming onboard. They also informed Sea Shepherd that there was no need for any research regarding the salmon farms because the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans already does research."

do they need work permits? who is paying them to conduct research? are they being paid? is this research that can be by Canadians? are they bringing in specialized equipment that can only be sourced out side of canada? or can it be sourced in canada by Canadians?

Not that I am advocating for baywatch science from Watson's ego - but it would make an interesting court case if they refused entry to an American vessel navigating a international waterway to Alaska w/o any real reason - other than that the upper echelon in DFO asked somebody in customs to delay or refuse the boat (which would be ultra vires or illegal). They don't need a work permit to navigate the waterway - and can take weather or oceanographic readings as much as they want to.

Considering all their comments in the media and facebook ect... Their chance of lying to do that has long past.... The Martin sheen has been deployed the last 2 summers.

"Watson wrote that the Sea Shepherd society will join Morton’s efforts against that industry."

Unless of course you beleive that the Martin Sheen brings something to the table that the PSF does not i don't see a point for them being their.

I don't see any benefit for them to be here, neither - but that's not the point.

The point is: legally - can they be refused? This isn't just crossing a border into Canada - there are rights to navigate - and anyone can take pics/video, etc.

I imagine they will instead try to delay them rather than refusing them. Might be too embarrassing to DFO to have this stuff come out in court.

United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea PART III. STRAITS USED FOR INTERNATIONAL NAVIGATION

Article 38. Right of transit passage

1. In straits referred to in article 37, all ships and aircraft enjoy the right of transit passage, which shall not be impeded; except that, if the strait is formed by an island of a State bordering the strait and its mainland, transit passage shall not apply if there exists seaward of the island a route through the high seas or through an exclusive economic zone of similar convenience with respect to navigational and hydrographical characteristics.

2. Transit passage means the exercise in accordance with this Part of the freedom of navigation and overflight solely for the purpose of continuous and expeditious transit of the strait between one part of the high seas or an exclusive economic zone and another part of the high seas or an exclusive economic zone. However, the requirement of continuous and expeditious transit does not preclude passage through the strait for the purpose of entering, leaving or returning from a State bordering the strait, subject to the conditions of entry to that State.

SECTION 3. INNOCENT PASSAGE

Article 45. Innocent passage

1. The regime of innocent passage, in accordance with Part 11, section 3, shall apply in straits used for international navigation:

(a) excluded from the application of the regime of transit passage under article 38, paragraph 1; or
(b) between a part of the high seas or an exclusive economic zone and the territorial sea of a foreign State.

2. There shall be no suspension of innocent passage through such straits.

(b) discriminate in form or in fact against the ships of any State or against ships carrying cargoes to, from or on behalf of any State.

they can legally be refused if they are coming here to protest. Im sure they were just stop to have all their electronic devices searched... They can also be legally refused entry if they don't comply with the search.

I guess we can wait and see what comes out of the court hearing

protesting is not illegal, WMY - although trespass could be...
