Catching herring

In the old days we raked herring no problem, with the price of bait now I wouldn't mind catching my own and freezing. Anyone know best time of year?

I think most catch them in February when they are spawning closer to shore. But you can catch them any tine of the year. You just have to locate a Bait ball and lower a sabiki rig.
This link will show how to make a sabiki rod. If the link doesn't work, just google sabiki rod. Lower the sabiki rig to the depth the bait ball is and catch some fresh bait. Sometimes easier said than done, but if you have the right rig there is always a chance. Hope this helps.

Carry a long handled tight mesh dip net on your boat at all times. When you see a **** load of birds piled up on a spot on the ocean race over to it. It's a bait ball. Dip your net and you'll be pleasantly surprised. You can try it to with your sounder for bait balls but the tell tale when they are right at the surface is the birds going nuts.
