What fish is this??

I caught this fish with a plastic straight warm and EWG hook at Deer Lake, Burnaby, today. What kind of species exactly is this fish?

Looks like a very small Largemouth Bass

That was my first thought but from the picture i saw on google a bass has a spicky dorsal fin and that one doesn't. Do you know why? And how do you know if that's a largemouth not smallmouth?

It might have been injured as a minnow seen that in other species.

And how do you know if that's a largemouth not smallmouth?

In a Largemouth the mouth extends past the eye with a Smallmouth it doesn't.

A person has to use a bit of imagination when the fish is being held like that but the description fits.
