I like wildlife; Right next to the mashed potatoes! Cheers, Island Idiot[:o)]

Didn't get any LEH's this year, but we're going up to Burns Lake for the general opening in a little under three weeks.
Getting very excited!!!
Need to go warm up with an island blacktail before then.

Saved up enough money to finally pay for future therapy sessions for the boy (turned 13 this year) and took him out just after opening day. Will take him out when I get back home next week for the local deer. Hopefully he will take to it like I did. Need to hand down my collection of guns to someone!!!!

Found this guy bedded on the back side of a ridge a couple of weeks ago. He sure is good eating this time of year, he was full of blueberries and huckelberries.

Hey Wolf saw you yesterday in the Can Tire parking lot. By the time I recognized you, you were pulling away. I head up to the interior with my son on the 18th for a week of chasing Mule deer and hopefully a spike fork. Then the second week of November off to Cold Lake Alberta for my anual white tail trip. Counting down the minutes, either way it will be more succesful than my spring fishing this year.....

Yes that was me getting something for a guick fix getting ready for this week(thurs) needed to re load some shells (7mm stw) or as my buddy says anti aircraft gun LOL.

Takes 76 gr of powder spitting out a 162 grain bullet yes it is f***** fast so I am good to go for both hunts shooting a whitetail most of the time over 200 to 300 yards sometimes further nice to have such a nice flat shooting rifle.

Good luck to you guys and your hunting trips just remember, how many hours we spend in the wilds and how little we really harvest fishing or hunting the amount of time we spend out there is incredable, but thats why we do it its always not about the killing but the good times we all have out there.

wolf
10-06-2008, 09:31 AM
It stands for "shooting times western" a writer for the magazine invented the wildcat caliber it is a 8 mm necked down to a 7 mm bullet hence the amount of powder for re loading I tried so many different types of powder and bullet combos (more than the cost of the gun LOL LOL) but it is zeroed for 300 yds and hit tacks but it kicks a bit but dont seem feel it when I am shooting at game LOL LOL

Ah thanks for the comeback. Hotloads can take a man's shoulder off but I think you are big enough to handle it. I know what you mean about a round going off when aiming at a animal. Sometimes I ask myself if the gun went off. Like getting punched during a fight...never seems to feel as bad as in the gym. Is your rifle custom made?

barbender yes it is. Guy didnt like it "kicked" too much for him it really isnt that bad considering a normal 7mm. The barrel is a hart walker and when I took it to the gunsmith and told him what the guy was asking the words out of his mouth was if you dont I WILL

Hey wolf what kind of balistics do you get with that rifle? I would assume that there is little drop if you can sight out at 300 yrds. How does it compare with a traditional 7MM?

wolf
10-07-2008, 05:15 AM
At the muzzle it is going just over 3300 fps and at 100 yds it is 1.5 inches high zero at 300 and at 400 it drops down 7 inches.Past that I dont know, The first animal I took with it was a moose shooting across a lake which was over 450 yds on the range finder and put it just above his hump and he dropped instantly I was then hooked on it.

I like it because it has a clip but only had one and yes lost it up moose hunting on the bike luckly had my moose down and we had another gun in camp took me a bit but finally found a clip only place that sold them was the factory and had to beg to get them to send me some so I bought 3 of them just to be on the safe side.

I think they call that a frozen rope. That must be some serious kinetic energy on the receiving end. Do you shoot Noslers? Was the rifle made locally? Sorry I get more excited as I get older about hunting rifles than I do about swimsuit models (ok ok it's a tie). A friend of mine has a custom made 300 H & H which I found to have very average balistics.

Pahhhhh

Thats nothing....my 300 Rem Ultra mag shoots a 180 grain Nosler Accubond at 3310 fps:D:D:D It also swallows 92 gr of Reloader 22 everytime I squeeze the trigger[:0][:p] Two inches high at 100, dead on at 310 and 6" low at 400.

Love the balistics of flat shooting calibers because it takes away the guess on how high to hold inside 400 yards, which is about as far I can shoot with a good rest and the animal standing there. I shot a caribou at a measured 427 yards, but would rather get up close and personal, if they will allow me:D

Good luck on your hunt and takes some picts.

Sitka sounds almost exactlly the same and like you love how flat it shoots I use the same powder but use hornady lead I tried sierra, and a few others barnes was the worst (for this gun) as they went in sideways, personally think noslers are overpriced and over rated for reloading I have been using hornady for almost 30 years and they group well and have put many an animal up in the meadow in the sky.For this gun it shoots about a 1 inch group at 100 yds so to me it was the best configuration for this gun.

The first time I went out to chase whitetails in sask had my ol trusty 30-06 my guide yells to me get out and shoot the far one on the left "its a shooter" set up shoot notice my bullet hit the snow about 100 yds shy of the buck both my cousin and the guide gary are pissing themselves laughing as I know what has just happened !!!!! I been had I am from the westcoast where we accually have trees not flat as hell asked themm how far awy the buck was ...............
OOOOOOOHHHHHH about 800 yds he says!!!!!!

Hence the flatter shooting gun now!!!!

It was made in the 90s when that caliber first came out and was the rage I think it was from old gordens sporting goods.

I too love Hornadys, but they will not hold together at the velocity of the 300. I have used them in my .270 for 25 years and have never had a problem and they have taken sheep, goats, black bears, all the deer, elk and numerous moose.

The accubond is a great bullet with a BC that ensures that it shoots flat. They are not that expensive, compared to Barnes or Trophy Bonded and with the powder I burn, what is a few more cents anyways:D

I did the same thing in Alberta about 10 years ago, thought a buck was about ~300 yards out after a couple of shots and nothing happening, except the buck in afterburners, we paced it off at ~550[:0]. I wondered why the buck looked a little small.[:p] Now I own a Leica RF. No mistaking distances now!!!

Most embarassing hunting story ever. Was hunting moose up in Williams Lake 5 years ago. My rifle decides to part company with the scope so I borrow a buddies 45-70 lever action. It was zeroed in at 150 yards. No problem I think. Well a bull steps out following a cow. Bull gets within 45 yards. I put the crosshairs just below the hump and pull the trigger. Big bang and the moose scurries into the woods. Figuring the animal is down I walk in to collect my prize. Cant find the animal or any blood. Turns out I shot over top of the beast. I then realized the 45-70 is not really a rifle it is a mortar. You have to lob the shells at what ever you are shooting at. I still get embarrassed at that story.

last year i was hunting just north of fort st john. and i was glassing a large slash and a nice bull walks out from behing a stand of willows. i used my mill dots and it turns out to be aroud 600 yds i only had my .308 browning leaver action with me. so i get to a nice rest and put the cross hairs 2 feet above the hump and squeeze the trigger the bull reared up on his hind legs and fell backwards. my accubond bullet went thru the front quarter the lungs and heart and was in the skin on the opposite side. i will never let someone tell me a .308 is not enough gun for moose hunting. i measured it out to be 627yds. my best shot in the book.

So what would he have done if he just ran away??? or you gut shot him??? or broke his front leg???? By the time you walked the 600+ yards to get there, he could be 1/2 mile away........:(

Crazy, hail mary shots like that with an under gunned firearm is what gives us hunters a crappy name. Good shot, maybe, lucky....hmmmmm probably. The 308 is not a long range cannon designed to shoot animals at long distances. At 600 yards you would need to hold over 74", that 6'......and it only has a 1000 ft/lbs of energy.

Not doubting you killed the moose, but I believe you were much closer than you think. 600+ yards is a long friggin way out there and with a 308........

and if you measured the distance with a rangefinder, then I will shut up:)

Yes, i understand that it was not a smart shot to take. but in the moment i guess i dident stop to think. three weeks after that trip i bought myself a winchester model 70 .300 mag and i took it to the range and i was shooting 4 liter jugs of water at 500 yds no problem. the gun is amazing.

So you want a funny screw up story ehh... Well this one is my best. Last year i was hunting Black bear in Pink Mountain and i was walking and saw some fresh sign so i stopped and i walked thru some tall grass ( about 5 feet) and over a shoal and i heard somthing so i stopped and about 7-8 feet infront of me a full grown black bear boar stands up out of the grass, and looks down at me. At this point i was so caught off guard i fall on my ass while trying to load my gun. the bear turns and runs away into the timber. I never saw another bear the whole trip. I went straight back to camp to wipe my butt. Goes to show you that you never know what kind of situation you can get into. Had it been a Sow with cubs or a grizzly i wouldent be writing this post rite now.

Well just got back from the island trip for elk and came back empty handed goes like this, as I didnt have the tag was not going to shoot,I really wanted my buddy to get it all by himself went up first morning to a fav spot (from last year)
and there they were close to 20 elk on the ridge so we made our 2 mile walk to get them as we can spot them from about 1000 yds away but you got to hike around the side of the mountain to get to them.

Get my buddy to sneak up on them he gets to 200 yds and he fires 3 shots ooooohhhhh ooooohhhh I watch from 50 or so yards behind him watching the big boy walk into the forset never to be seen again he proceeds to tell me after many years of hunting this is the first time he has ever gotten the shakes (buck/elk fever)then he tells me he stopped counting tines after he got to 8 points on one antler and it was crowned on the top with points so who knows how many it had but it was a trophy of a life time for sure. we saw a few more that day no bulls day 2 we found a little bull but he wanted a bigger one LOL LOL so what am I supposed to say????? we should have shot this one but it happens after that it was too nice man did it get warm it was 27 degress on sunday and monday so we saw nothing even the trophy west guys had spotters everywhere looking never seen so much activity out there.

We be going back in mid november hopefully.

quote:. i will never let someone tell me a .308 is not enough gun for moose hunting.

I have a 308 for moose hunting, but it is a 308 Norma Magnum I just use factory loads. Norma factory loads for the .308 Magnum drive a 200 grain Vulkan bullet to a muzzle velocity (MV) of 2903 fps. I'm thinking it has lots of stopping power. The Hornady Handbook shows that their potent 220 grain InterLock bullet can be driven at a MV of 2300 fps by 60.5 grains of RL-25 powder, and to a MV of 2800 fps by a maximum charge of 75.1 grains of RL-25. You should see the butt of the rifle has been melted due to recoil on some home made moose stoppers!

I read that
quote:the reloader will find that the .308 Norma will handle bullets heavier than 180 grains every bit as well as (or better than) the .300 Win. Magnum, and considerably better than the new short .300 WSM and .300 Rem. SAUM cartridges. Due to its combination of standard length, a longer neck than most of its competitors, and excellent Norma brass, the .308 Norma Magnum may be the all-around best .300 Magnum cartridge for the dedicated reloader.

You can have your 300 mag!

Being a 200 gr bullet, what is the trajectory like? Thats what i like most about the .300 is the fact that i can shoot distance with less drop ( depending on the distance it is zero'd in at) by the sounds of the velocity the .308 norma must shoot extremely flat. any idea what it puts out with a 180 gr?

The 308 Norma Mag is beyond a hunting rifle. It is more of an AMW. (Anti-Material-Weapon) or a very long range sniper rifle.

Lets keep this on track ok please no need for arguing, enough said!!!!!!

As for a 308 norma mag my uncle had one and I wish I could get it great gun, with this day and age of techknowledgy a rifle choice comes down to personal preferance on what caliber you may or may not want to use mine was simple the price was right.
When you look at all different factors do you really think a moose at 200 yds whos gets hit with a 30-06 150 gr. bullet going 2700fps or a 7mm 180 gr bullet doing 3000 fps is thinking WOW that was that 30-06 or a 7mm that got me!!!!!!!!!;);).

All the rifles we on the forum have mentoined WILL do the job what separates is the type of hunter thats using them the good or bad I have seen alot of very bad hunters over the last 30 yrs some just dont respect the animal they hunt and totall disregard of the animal they have killed we have all seen. its called hunter ethics some have it some dont.

Keep it on track.

i agree, i saw a guy shooting a moose with a .243 and 500 yds, and i knew he was hitting it, but it ran for miles. i could have shot the guy. its all about the choices you make and your confidence in yourself and your gun. i have made bad choices, but been lucky also. and after more reasearch on my calibres i know what i can and cant do ( a few good days at the range helps also)

It is a long standing question as to which 300 Cal mag is the best. Look on any hunting forum and you will see this same debate. But that's all this is a debate. There is no need for you to go all parental on us!

I was sipmly letting this fellow know there are 308 calibers that can more than get the job done on a moose. Bottom line 300 mag and 308 norma mag have very similar stopping power. The 308 NM used to win many competitions for 1000 yrd shots. Personally though I like the tradjectory of my 25-06. That bullet comes out the muzzle at a sizzling 3,700 fps. But only good for deer really.

It always comes down to confidence and knowledge of your gun and calibre. when i shoot somone elses gun it takes aprox 1-2 boxes of shells to fully feel comfortable to hunt with it. I borrowed my grandfathers .308 for hunting one trip and was not cofortable with it. I told my partner i would not shoot anything over 150 yds. The moose we saw was about 300 yds. so i let him shoot it for me. I also am the kind of hunter who just wants to be a part of the hunt. I enjoy watching a buddys excitment and joy just as much as it being my own. He tells me that one year i will fill his tag. But he knows i wont hold him to that.

Traveling through the black diamond area i see a lot of deer.Thats on the 22 hiway in alberta. Also for elk on the crows nest pass.Someone should shoot them for they are a menace on the roads. There are some masive bulls.from cranbrrok to bellvue.Although hunting them would be unsportsman like because they are standing in the middle of the road lol

thanks the runt

Back just a week ago from an Alberta run. Loads of whitetails about, managed to fill out all of our tags in right short order, including one fine 5x5! Sweet! Saw lots of moose (no tags of course) and even the odd elk.

Now planning the Island blacktail sortie, then likely back to Alberta in November for mulies and whatever...

Been a great hunting fall thus far, certainly hoping that continues!!

Best of Luck on the Elk Buddy! Kenny tagged out on a HUGE one up that way just shortly ago, so there still is a few about. And if the deer ain't a giant, I'd certainly appreciate a good caping job ;)

On other fronts, the Fallow cull is nearing the end. On Stand-by for the offshore, awaiting the passage of this latest Ugly. Then back off to Alberta again (hooked on whitetails!) with a stop in the OK on the way back for the same. Hope we both find some success out on the COLD Flatlands!! [^]

Howdy,

Buddy and I did our fourth consecutive trip in late Sep early Oct. Spent a week just north of Princeton then finished up with our usual last week in the East Kootenays. Princeton was so hot the bugs drove us nuts. http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w279/andy1canada/Hunting2008022.jpg
http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w279/andy1canada/Hunting2008019.jpg
Had the strangest BUG experience of any trip ever. Early one day I noticed these tick-like bugs (about 3/4-inch) congregating or hatching on the rocks around the fire. I counted nearly two-dozen or so of the little buggers then, much to my chagrin, I noticed I had two or three on me. They seemed to be trying to get at my skin. I semi-freaked and swatted them off only to have more of em' attack me. There I was, running around camp with these little peckers chasing me. This went on for the duration of that day every time I (and only me) went near the fire. Strange.

We spent and inordinate amount of time on the bikes...
http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w279/andy1canada/Hunting2008011.jpg
as the bush was tinder dry and noisy as hell. On three or more days we put on over 100/kms... and still shot nothing. The two guy's we met up there shot a spike and a 4-point.

In the E.K. just south of Fairmont we fared no better. The elk were silent (which was unusual) and not one whitey with bones on its head showed itself. The "meat" end of it was disappointing but it's hard not to enjoy oneself in a place like this...
http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w279/andy1canada/Hunting2008034.jpg

Counting the days till next year!
Hope you whack a nice whitey Wolf!

Cheers,
Terry

Just got back from Creston. Filled my Cow Elk tag on the first day. Had a great time. Stayed at a ranch, shot the Elk a block and a half away from the house and retrevied it with the tractor. Met a great bunch of proud red necks and for the first time ever, the liqour bill exceeded the gas bill! The East Kootneys are unbelievable. Saw Bull Moose, Bull and Cow Elk, Mule Deer, Whitetails, Big Horn Sheep, and unbelievable views. :D

Congrats on the elk Buddy! Cool!:D
No Worries on the cape thing. Still have quite a bit of season left, so we have the luxury of a little time...
One of the Ladz spotted one of our local Monsters last night, making the mistake of wandering [u]out</u> of the No Fire Zone. He didn't capitalize then, so another foray is called for. If I didn't have a few on hand to cut for the Boyz, I'd be on that windy old ridge tonight. But duty calls, so the buck gets a break until tomorrow it seems...

Not often I smile when reading the words "Storm Warning", but gotta admit, with that particular sighting, I did... very much so!;):D

You do hunt fish and that is really not a lot different, other than you can catch and release..:D;)

Same mind set is needed, you have to match witts with the prey and the result is food on the table, so in much the same way, you hunt, just for a different species.

Thanks

Managed to score another 2 point!! Nice island deer, tan colored not grey like the last 2. My brother in-law is tanning them and is going to try to make a drum. We hear elk works better, but I am not supposed to shoot them. Any elk hides laying around?

Funny story behind this deer, Me and my friend get up at 4 o clock to get out there, we drive up the dirt road and see another truck already up the road, I pull up behind him as him and his buddy are just getting back to their truck, I believe they were scopeing an area. Anyways the driver comes up to me on my side and leans into the truck with attitude and says
quote: You know.. usually when I see a truck up the road from me I just turn around and go home! Instantly see red! think to myself who the hell does this guy think he is and reply as I rev my engine and drive around his truck, over a bunch of jagged rocks and a 2 ft bank " well you better f@%k!n go home then!" drove around him and his buddy who was rolling around on the front seat laughing at his freind for trying to pull a heavy. Drove down the road about 1/4 mile and he was standing right on the road! Karma gets me another one! I hope this guy learned something about it, becuase all he had to do was come up to us and say sorry for ruining your plans guys but we where here first and would like the opportunity to hunt here alone. I would have had no problem at all if he was civil about it, but because he started right up with the attitude he got what he deserved, and hopefully I taught him a lesson about how to handle the same situation in the future.

Take only what you need.

YES it was fun we started in calgary by watching the flames /detroit game and having a few bevies at the game, the game was ok great seats had fun nothing like watching fans in calgary rooting for their team alot of detroit fans makes it quite interesting to say the least fights in the stands beer being spilled (priceless) LOL...before the game hit wholesale sports came out ok only a about 200 bucks spent not bad for that store!!!!!!

Then off to sask the next day I cooked a seafood feast for about 20 people oysters in the half shell with spinach and cheeses then bbq brown sugar/soya salmon with risotto rice and salads and good times
and the best part his mom made homemade pies and buns ohhhhhh my god thought i died and was in heaven they were so good she made enough buns for our lunches all week, must admit people in small towns sure treat you good and are very friendly thats what keeps me going back every year.

Good Job Wolf!:D

Encountered the same issues with weather this time out east - no snow, days so warm you'd swear it was September, and the deer simply refusing to move. Made for the toughest hunting conditions I've encountered out that way ever! That said, my Buddy passed up just over 65 whitetail heads in a little better than a week, so there were a few about. He was (and is) committed to finding his Booner, so left without taking any.
Also saw loads upon loads of elk, moose, mulies, and even some wild pigs (lucky for them they were on posted land!).

So now it's back home, still have a blacktail to dig out of the woodwork, and but a few days to do so...

And with that, I'll leave you with my fondest memory of this latest foray [^]
