My luck finally changed, my first salmon out of Sidney, not one but two! A 16lb & 12lb off Fairfax Pt on Sunday at low slack. First on Anchovy and second on Army Truck Coyote.
Thanks to all who posted their Sidney reports/tips, nice to post one of my own for a change!

I was out by Fairfax as well, seen a guy he was by himself land a fish, looked like he was in about 18-20 ft hardtop boat, just wondering if that was you?
I didn't hook any salmon, but couldn't keep the dogfish of my line [V]

I saw the same guy, his boat looked a bit like a Hourston, not sure what make. I was out in a 24' Wellcraft Airslot (Gwailo - see pic), open top centre console. I took my mum out for her birthday fishing trip, she had a great time. We got about 4 dogfish, already had one Spring on Anchovy so decided to switch to a spoon and a hootchie on the other rod, five minutes in and the spoon got one!
What boat were you on? There was a nice Trophy out there, with a blue hull.

Sounds like a great day. Have been out there a few times lately but no luck. How deep were you? I usually go around 90 to 105ft there, but just lots of dogs to date.

I was fishing around the 110ft mark, lots of fish on the sounder at the slack, then nothing about an hour later. Unfortuanltely the engine started knocking on the way back into the marina so I might have to postpone my trip this weekend.
Just when I start catching something the engine goes!

I was out in Sidney on Monday and Tuesday nights giving the new tub her maiden voyage(s). I got 1 undersized and my buddy lost one that straightened his hook on Monday night and I picked up a teenager on Tuesday. All fish were on Cop Car Coyotes.

I was out at Fairfax, Hambley and the bluffs, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday about 4 hours each day. I only saw one teenager get caught at Fairfax. All I got was a small dog and a 3 lb Chinook. Lots of bait balls everwhere though. Commercial trollers were at the Pender bluffs on Monday morning. Was following one for a few hours and I saw them get 1 small salmon on board.

Fished Pender this weekend 3rd/4th. Hit it hard for that country...10hrs Saturday and 7hrs Sunday. Tough sledding! Tried c-spoons, cutty, anchovie, and even the hootch. No shiny ones not even a sniff, but on the plus side, there are a heck of a lot less dogs left for y'all. Saw one other boat with one on that they played with for quite awile...not sure of outcome. Weather and company were great, beer waz cold and lookin forward to gittin back to the outside! Cheers.
I hope you released it as Fairfax closed on Aug 1

It's a bit of a search mission this time of year. Try both and get back to us. Might be a popular spot this winter if things get shut down from Sooke to Vic.

It's a long shot but the chum are going through there now. Maybe slow troll and little squirts might work like Browns Bay. Look for them finning. The Red Can or Powder Wharf might start holding winters.

there will be no salt water fishery at all.:(

Hi,everyone,I'm new to fishing and have a couple of questions if that's alright? First off, where are some good places near Sydney to fish, and secondly, why are winter springs found in deeper water than summer springs?
Thanks,crabby.
Well first its Sidney not Sydney, next and more important its because the feed in Sidney stays almost on the bottom.

Has anyone fished the Sidney area in the past few days? Island Outfitters are talking it up pretty good. Can anyone verify?
Report
Sidney
Salmon fishing was EXCELLENT once again this past week. Nice springs up to 15 lbs have been caught near Sidney Spit, Coal Island and Moresby Island. Some of the old timers are saying that the fishing recently has been as good as it’s ever been. Also, a lot of the fish have been quite shallow recently, 40 to 50 feet, and close to shore. There has been bait balls in the area and birds working the bait. Small anchovies or Tiny Strip have been the best natural bait. Spoons have been good recently with Green and Glow colors producing best. The best soft plastic lures to use for springs now are Glo Below, Pistachio and Purple Haze Squirts.
Sidney is appealing when the winds are blowin out west
Thanks

little tardy on the report but here it is for the 24th
Much slower day-the current was moving a lot more. Managed one small one with a long line release.
Got a feeling that a late afternoon-early evening fish is a little more productive.
Tiny strip is the ticket, and keep it on the bottom.
Hopefully they will be around a bit longer, I'm not done looking for them.

Changed a 3-day Sooke trip to Sidney to avoid slot restrictions, and for nicer overall water. First weekend in June, Friday through Sunday, staying north Saanich, prawns, salmon off Sidney......I'd appreciate any pointers. I've been gleaning hard, primarily on this site, but would take any pointers, and would love to hear reports from this weekend, if only to 'wet my whistle'?

We trolled off the southeast end of James Island Saturday. Ended up with our limit of springs between the two of us. All fish caught in 120 - 140 ft of water and dragging the bottom with purple haze squirts and glow flashers. We also released countless other springs at the side of the boat - I have never seen so many fish in this area before.

Last Sunday we got our limit in 80-100 ' just north of the red can in Sidney channel - green flashers, green/glow coyotes on the bottom. 3 out of 4 were clipped, all 8-10 pounds. Monday only one keeper, 11 pounds, same gear/place. Told my neighbour about it and last night he called to tell me he limited yesterday afternoon: two 22's, a 16 and a "little one". He's out there again today and I would be too if I hadn't gone to the Victoria Whiskey Festival yesterday...

Yea, I had a 12lb cannonball and some gear wrapped around one on friday.Floats were sunk in the middle of the channel. Was so pissed off I tried to haul it up and get my gear back. Not as strong as I thought.
The commercial crabber out there just doesn't care- I watched him as he ran over my floats last year. Guy wasn't even at the helm!
Methinks it's gonna get ugly the day I meet him...

For the past couple of weeks the crap traps have been a little crazy. Just passed the powder warf was almost unfishable, in the straight. And Hoochie, I had a similar issue with one of the traps. I found out I can almost pull hard enough to submerge my little double eagle without budging the trap off bottom haha.
Also, is there a regulation about these guys who use clear milk jugs and garbage to float their crab trap lines? Am I legal to pull the damn things and throw them on shore? My apologies the alberta red neck comes through pretty strong at times ;)

Unfortunately in the regs it is only "recommended" that you aren't using milk jugs, hooch bottles, fresca bottles and your delicate laundry detergent bottles that hold what you use for cleaning your "delicates". ;)

Stange they waited till after the Derby timming is everything at least the natives didn't get them. Maybe bananas is on to something after all they need the derby money to run the hatchery program.Sad state of affairs when all the dough
we pay (taxes, fees ,lic etc) go into general revenue & not our fishery.

Fished Fairfax on Friday, one bite right at the point and then nothing. Kicker steering unit disconnected right in the tide rip, boad spun round and I had a nice mess of lines to deal with!
Nasty dead head bobbed right past the boat, reported it to Victoria Coastguard, hopefully they flagged it as there were boats everywhere. Hope it didn't ruin anyone's weekend.

Was out there last weekend crabbing and having a bbq with the wife and kids in the channel... no fishing for us but about 6 or so boats in front of the powder warf tackin along. Lots of bait on the sounder with a few fish showing at the bottom. I would be on the squirts or small chovies hugging the sand if I were you. good luck!

Last weekend we got about a 12 lb chinook just south of the point by powder wharf. 85ft contour line passing through a cloud of needlefish at sunrise. Green flasher, green glow teaser and chovie. Saw tonnes of bait and salmon on the finder at Hamley, but no bites there.
Wanted to fish Oak Bay Flats or waterfront yesterday, but too windy. Headed out late, missed any early bite, but figured we'd get something on the tide change at Hamley Point on Sidney Island. Got there around 10 and fished until 2, but no salmon in the net. There was more bait and salmon on the sounder than I have ever seen though. Lots of bait balls along the wall at 95, blankets of bait in 100-150ft, and very thick near the tide rips. 4 boats trolling, one jigging, but did not see any salmon netted.
I recommend if you want some salmon, hit Hamley hard at sunrise.

After seeing how thick the fish were down at Hamley Pt etc, decided a dawn run was required today. Fished 5am to 11 today.
It was the dead zone out there. I have never seen so little bait or salmon anywhere. Ever.
Hamley= very few scattered salmon/dogfish, no baitfish to be seen. Darcy Shoals= dead zone, nothing showing, no bites.South side of James Island channel=dead zone, nothing at all showing. Powder wharf/point a few tiny bait schools and one undersize chinook about 3lbs on a 3.5 green/glow coyote & green flasher, big hit off a white glow hootchie behind an army truck flasher, but lost it. No other bites, couldn't find bait again or any salmon on the finder. Went north around James and fished the point off island view by the reserve. No fish, no bait, no bites.
RS Craven says same kinda dead zone off Oak Bay today.
I guess we must wait for the next wave from Sooke/Renfrew.

Heard there is a decent amount of sox's and humpys out there. If it's anything like Sooke then take lots of bait!

Excellent day at Pender Bluffs, sunshine and no wind. Lots of boats out in the a.m. we managed a 15lb spring, 2 sockeye and 8 pinks, that lot kept us busy for most of the day! Had another spring on but bit through the leader. Got the spring on Purple Haze flasher and bloody nose teaser. Hopefully it gets a bit thicker with Sockeye over the weekend, heading back out on Sunday with any luck.
The spring was a bit on the mushy side once fillet it, anyone else get these from time to time?

Fished Fairfax this morning 6am right at the tide change, got a 12lber in the first 15min, then another one on shortly after but it came off, chewed through the leader. Then it went quiet, saw one more salmon picked up around 9am. A few boats out at Coal but didn't see any action.

Fished Wymond and Hambley yesterday morning, nasty tide rip first thing. Small whale came through, too busy watching it we almost missed a double header! Two small springs, then a third about half an hour later which we released as it was undersized. We were all alone to begin with then 4 other boats joined us at midday for the slack. Any other reports?

I fished the bluffs yesterday morning, 6 till noon and picked up a big Spring although it was the only bite we had all morning. 7 or 8 other boats also fishing and didn't see
anyone reaching for the net. I have heard of a few Springs coming off of the bluffs but they seem to be few and far between. Apparently a few pinks around too. The
water temp has dropped significantly over the past few days and there now seems to be a lot of bait fish showing on the sounder so hopefully things pick up.

Gave Hamley Point a try yesterday for the first time, 7 - 12 AM. There was bait around, but no luck. Beautiful glassy water early on, but getting choppy by noon.
