Ketchican may be the Halibut capital but not the salmon capital of the world.

Well I'd have to give the edge to Port Alberni for Salmon Capital of the World, but dang nab it's a close race.

As for Salmon Stealing Seal Capital of The World, Nanaimo wins hands down!! No competition here.

If the question is the salmon capital meaning the largest number of salmon passing by one city it would have to be the town of Masset, QCI

The question was between the two, Port or Campbell and Port wins hands down!

Thats Mr. Bags to you

If I had to pick between the 2 I would have to say Port, but its a tough call if you take the banks and barkley sound out of the picture. C.S is right about one thing though

Hey guys, lets talk about year round fishery, and all the salmon species. Campbell Creek gets springs, coho, socks, dogs and humpies. You don't have to run for miles to get to the grounds. Jigging, trolling, mooching, flyfishing etc is all at your doorstep. I fish Port and Barkley, Nootka and CR and love em all, just depends what species I am targetting and how I want to catch em!!!

If you are just talking salmon, and the criteria is sheer numbers, not species, then you have to go with PA.

CR in the last 10-15 years just hasn't has the #'s of fish due to increasing loss of habitat on the east coast of the Island and what seems to be an increasing trend for returning fish to come down the outside of the island not the inside passage.

Sharp hooks and full traps!

I would have to say cr because they have runs of chinook from may-september. I may be wrong but i thought that port only has sockeye may-september aand the chinooks start showing up in mid-late august. I have not fished port but i m goin on june.29 for a week or so at china creek. I might have to change my vote.

PA is awesome il give u all that...but i love campbell river cuz the area is sooo rich in history..im not saying Pa isnt, i dont know or not...but im just a kid and i appreciate what people like Roderick Haig-brown and and Van Egan have done for the area, the fishing, everything..i am sure that port alberni has more fish to catch, maybe better fish and better overall fishing..but still i love campbell river and will always support it as the true Salmon Capital of the World!!

If anyone really gives this question any thought there is only one right answer.
Any guesses?

If based upon a) the number of boating days per year; b) the number of fish landed overall, and c) the number of fish that return to the area and are therefore accessible, Port Alberni wins hands down. Period.

Just the way if it.

Mr.Ironoggin,
How many times have you landed a salmon grand slam in the Port Alberni Area?(salt water)
Ive been fortunate enough to have done it twice in two consecutive years here in Campbell River. Campbell River is the only area i know of where it is possible to do that. If I am wrong please correct me, but i honestly cant think of another place you can do that in saltwater.

happy fishing,
cody

Grand Slams are common in many places from Sooke to the Charlottes, especially on a pink year down south

There are extremely few places where a grand slam is possible, being taken over a single day. The most obvious would be off Ucluelet in August - the sox and pinks are going by, and easy to take, coho and springs are thick, so doable, the variable would be the chumlies, but a possibility.

In the Inlet, I and many of my buddies have taken all species over a season, the pinks to here are limited, but it's quite generous with the rest. It's a matter of timing, as not all return to the flow at the same time. That being said, it is usually a deadly fishery for salmon of some variety over most of the season, and between that and steel, thats the main reason I reside here.

Cheers,
Nog

I've never tried those other places but every year I take a one week trip to Langara Island in British Columbia. If you want great salmon fishing and great scenery, this is it. My buddy and I just got back last week, staying with the West Coast Fishing Club. On one particular morning from 6 to 11, we caught and released over 30 salmon including 7 double headers. Everyday's average was at least 20 fish and the seas were flat calm.
