Just wondering if anyone knows if cutties in the little qualicum or small systems like it stay in the river for the winter. I fell in love with cutty flyfishing about 7 years ago but only know how to get them from may to when the pinks start coming in.
When, where(ocean or river) do they spawn?
Why are they so hard to catch when the first of the salmon start to run?
If you can get them in the winter, what fly works best?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanx

From what I know most sea runs enter the systems in the fall to feed on the salmon eggs and will winter over till the salmon fry are leaving the river.

Mickey finn works well or the royal coachman as far as wet flies are concerned. The renegade seems to work well for dry flies. Why would cutties feed on flies when there are nice ripe berries flowing from under every rock? Think about it!

They head up river to really small tribs to spawn in the late winter/spring. Then they hang around to feed on the fry that are hatching in the spring and follow them out to the ocean. Thats my take on it anyways

Eh roebags i know what u mean about the big q. i use to fish it before the feathers claimed it was all their land and water. i caught my biggest cutty ever in that river(about 3.5 pounds) at the corner pool just after the hatchery pool.
Great memories from that system. I fished it a few times after the government gave in to the natives the complaints that "they had the spiritual right to manage(destroy) the river system given to them by the creator"
But lost interest after an unpleasant expereince with a " first nations" holding a knife to my throat, and not so kindly escorting me off "their land".
I hope that one day the government will pull up their panties and realize that sport fishing is something that should be enjoyed by everyone, no matter what colour their skin is or who treated who badly years and years ago.
Well those are my thoughts about the big q. I am not trying to be racist towards natives just saying the truth!!!!!
