If you are using larger herring in the Queen Charlottes, what is the distance between the hooks? I have to tie a bunch and don't want then way out. I'm guessing six inches, but will an expert lend me a hand here?

the standard bait is a large herring and I find you cant go wrong with a six inch spead.

The standard bait is not a large herring it's more likley a medium. If your fishng early spring near spawning herring then maybe?.If your herring hookup means one in or around the mouth and the other 3/4 back then I would tie your hooks no more than 4 inch's apart.I don't know how much you cut plug so you might want to consider just one sharp Gamy and run it thru. There are a couple of web sites that show how.Either way 6 inch's is too far apart no matter where you are fishing.PS If you want a trailer hook even on hootchies then 6 inches work's well.I have nabbed many fish on a loose trailer.

I would have to agree with YO MAMA on this topic. The standard herring size is large, EXTRA LARGE IS TO BIG. Better to tie your leaders longer than shorter, you can always hide the extra bit or even use it as a weed guard

Thanks all,

We have used XL in a crisis but normally used large herring. We are there mid summer and I've never seen a medium herring at that time, but who's to say it wouldn't work better. I think the SLOW trolling (almost a Power mooch) is the secret, not the size of the bait, but that's another topic ...

I think I'll go 5 1/2 - 6 inches.

By the way, someone mentioned web sites with this type of rig. I tried to find some but couldn't. I'd appreciate the addresses if you have them. I found many with knots, but none with rigs.

Oh yeah, not "Roper"

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm,

wonder what size of slabs we could nail up there with Xtra large herring...............

And as for the Medium herring comment,

In my 8 years in that local I am yet to see a medium size herring alive in our waters. All of the herring that I've jigged have been in the large family. This is not to say that mediums wouldn't hammer dem if used though.

Down riggers vs. mooching, lets see.. Being somewhat of a purist when it comes to mooching cut plug herring on the sliders, it all depends on the method at hand to decide on the size of bait to use. In the charlottes there are two distinctive runs of herring in the area through the summer months... In early to mid June the first of the goldy backs come through in schools the size of many football fields.. If you are lucky to jig some of this natural bait up you will find that the size is big lg. to xtra lg.
Depending on your method, be it downriggers or mooching take these considerations into hand.. When riggin cutty's it only makes sense to use a med. to lg. in order not to blow them out quicker than say an ex. lg..
When mooching the old saying-the bigger the bait, the bigger the fish surely holds true as I have worked with 23 other guides on a daily basis and when a case of xtra. lg. gets thrown into the bait freezer you know who is on the dock first in the morning. It can be a frenzy in it's own...
Charlotte herring are by far larger than their southern cousin's so it only goes to show what the pigs preferences are on each and every tide!!!Hope it helps.cheers-the dirtdog

For the last 20 years I have used a 2 hook rig. One up front(however and wherever you prefer, depending on whole or plug cut), then the trailing hook dangling and tied to trail the tail by an inch or two. NOT hooked into the bait. I use a 6/0 up front and a 7/0 trailing. These fish don't nibble. They gulp and gobble. The smallest bite they can take is still big enough to get the whole damn thing in their mouth, all at once. But, they are natorious tail biters so the trailer really gets them. 90% will be on the trailer. The front hook just holds the bait on. They aren't leader shy either, so use 40# leaders. Try it. . . you'll like it!!
