My wife and I just got back on Sundayt after a week in Sooke. We had a blast!

I wan't to thank the regulars on this board that helped build our confidence for our first trip ever to Sooke. Thought the fishing was spotty we still were able to scratch out two fish. The first was a #10 Spr on friday caught on an anchovie at 105ft near the trap shack:

The second was caught by my sister in law who viseted us on saturday. 17.5# caught at 30ft on chrome 5.0 coyote:

We tried hard for halibut but had no luck. We even ran to a likely looking spot a couple of miles past Jordan river.

Here's a couple other shots.

Early morning breakfast (wink wink):

Beautiful light house:

Thanks again for the info. I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to meet any of you in person. If your headed down to fish the columbia river or just to the portland area please let me know!!

Sincerely,
GRIFF

I don't know if it was a small columbian or big spring but it was definetly at 30ft. It was also full of krill.

looks like a columbia river fish with that short, round head.

Im just curious if there is any truth behind IDing columbia nooks. I know the early fraser fish look the same with a short blunt nose.

There is no truth to it. For one thing, why would mature Columbia fish travel past Sooke? It makes absolutely no sense. Fraser fish come in all shapes and sizes. Just compare upper Fraser (i.e. Bowron, Macgregor, Dome) chinook to the ones found in the Quesnel area. They are very different morphologically. The same can be said about lower Fraser both within and among tributaries.

well I've heard theories where the true columbians swim down the island then back up the US side of the straight, around the corner and down to the Columbia.

I think most if not all "columbians" around here are really fraser fish though

Most Columbia fish travel down along the outside edge of the bank on there way back to spawn. There are always exceptions of course but the genetic data collected over the years has been quite conclusive.

I believe they took on that name only because of their resemblance to the columbia fish.
