Although i currently reside in Southern California(i've lived in Vancouver my entire life), my parents have a place on Mayne Island, and am heading up there in August. I've heard about good smallmouth fishing in the lakes on Saltspring Island. If anyone has information on what lake would be the best place to start out, and any other information on that fishery it would be greatly appreciated.

cheers

I believe Saint Mary's Lake holds trophy smallmouth. Do a google search.

Unfortunately August is the worst month to fish St. Mary's Lake-the warm water puts 'em down and action is slow to nil.

Late May through June into early July are the best times to hit the place.

that's why there's a warranty!

I would like to offer my two cents worth as far as the summer fishing at St.Mary's Lake on Saltspring Island.
Although, the summer months are typically more difficult to catch Smallmouth Bass, it is also an opportunity to try alternative techniques. The warm water tends to push the smallies down but it will also push them to cover. This lends itself to skipping tubes under over hanging trees as well as docks. Another great technique is the light Carolina Rig fished from 15 to 29 ft. deep. If you have any other questions regarding techniques or tackle please feel free to contact me at www.reactionbaits.com

That's one I've never tried-great idea especially early in the AM

I've Carolina rigged but never thought of using the rig that deep-with the Fireline I have on all my Bass rigs now it'd be a cinch.

Thanks for the info Terry!

Hi, I'm coming out to BC for the first time in 4 days and I'm staying at St. Mary lake for 2 days. Is there anything in particular that those smallies love?
Thanks JP

JP - You are going to have a blast..!!!
If you have 4" Lizzards, 4" Straight tail worms or tubes bring 'em.
You will also get them in the morning and evening on topwaters. I would throw jerkbaits or spinnerbaits, the whole range. Everything has a time and place in this lake. Some lakes lend themselves to certain baits but this lake has so many smallies, you can take the opportunity to learn some new techniques.
Where are you coming from? If you have any other questions please let me know.
Good luck, like you'll need it!! E-mail some St.Mary's Smallies along with your techniques so I can post it on my site..

Thanks for the info Terry. I'm coming from Ontario, this is my only break in my too busy tournament schedule. It will be great to unwind and not worry about weighing in at 3:00 every time!!! It sound like the smallies are just like here! We have some of the best lakes like Lake Simcoe and Lake Erie to catch enormous smallies, so it will be a great treat to fishing them somewhere else, on a small lake. I've fished them everyway possible here, but Lucky Craft Pointers, spinnerbaits and tubes seem to be the staples in Ontario. These 2 lakes give up 20 plus pounds on 5 fish on every tournament. Simcoes record is over 27 lbs for 5 fish, and Erie is about the same!!! I'll send some pictures when I get back from BC and Ontario with some info to go with it!!
Thanks JP

The numbers of smallies will blow your mind but the size of them won't be much to write home about. There is another lake over there call Cushion, this lake is very small, quite honestly should be a largemouth lake but it holds some very nice smallmouth. Fish this lake like they are largemouth and you should do just fine.

Have a great trip!!

I just got back 2 days ago from visiting Salt spring Island. WOW!!! I've never seen such agressive smallmouth bass. The size was okay, averaging 2.5 lbs but the numbers was great to see. I found that the key was deep weedlines in the day, using smoke and pumpkinseed 3.5" tubes on 1/8 oz. tear drop tube jigs that are poured onto a 3/0 gamakastsu jig hook. The fun began before dusk when the smallies moved into the reeds surrounding the lake. Soft plastic twichbaits, and topwaters (all weedless) thrown into the reeds proved to be the presentation of choice nailling 20 smallmouth in around an hour before dark.
Thanks for all the tips, I hope this helps somebody who wants to catch these fiesty fish.
Thanks Terry!!!

Hey JP - Welcome back. I am glad you had a good time, it is a beautiful place to catch smallies, hey?
Did you happen to snap some photo's we could post on our site?
I am curious about the tournaments you fish in Ontario, I fish tourny's in Washington State. How many do you participate in and do you belong to a bass club?

All the best,

Terry

Hi Terry, I fished 20 tourney's this year with 6 to go. Bassmania, CFT and Reelfishn',As for the club, I'm the treasurer for the Simcoe CFT chapter. It really is great to be able to fish this many tourney's all within 1.5 hours of home!! I've fished on 15 different lakes for these and they all have their own deal. Time on the water is a great bonus here! I'm waiting for the pics to be done and I'll email them to you!
Thanks

Hey JP -
That is a crazy schedule. It is hard to beat tournament days on the water, isn't it? Although the hours are long and sometimes the days drag, by the time Monday roles around, the urge is back.
We have a rewards program geared up for clubs. When the members of your club buy our products a percentage goes toward future purchases or free gear. Our club uses this to get free gear that we turn around and sell raffle tickets at our meetings to raise money for the year end awards dinner. Would your club be interested in taking part in that? I am happy to answer any of your questions.
This rewards program is also open to individuals who buy from us.
I am looking forward to seeing those pictures.
