I'm looking for the best spot to go on Vancouver Island this time of year to get some salmon and some bottom fish. I'm sick of the Comox Valley and I'm willing to trailer almost anywhere! What is everybody's opinion on where would be the best place to go for a couple days? Thanks for the input!

I love the north part of Desolation Sound. Fishing now is pretty good for chinooks up Bute Inlet and the area is beautiful. Little bottom fishing though and not as consistent as the west coast. An easy trailer from Comox to Campbell River and then go north. Email me if you want more details.

Hey SWC.
I think I see your boat up at Nootka? I go in around the Aug long weekend every year.
Fishing down here in Victoria is always hot. Sooke is in my opinion the new "salmon capital of the world"
Salmon fishing is just warming up and hali is hot on good tides.
Bottom fishing for cod is very limitted due to regs.
I fish here weekly. If you would like some info, drop me a line via e-mail. Maybe I can help you out.

There's nothing like a cheap drunk is there.
I bet half guys hanging round the fifth street bridge would give you the same deal there SWC.
Patience my friend, the ice is almost off and the season will begin soon enough.

You should trailer your boat to Sooke and troll around in the fog with the other 300 boats in that area. Then when you hook a decent fish you can complain about somebody running over your line with their downriggers cutting your fish off. Hehehehe It's a barrel of laughs. You should try it. It'll make you appreciate your area a little more.

I fished Sooke a fair amount last year. I found fishing to be good overall but I would not consider it consistently excellent. It's too bad it's so busy and crazy making.

I wouldnt diss sooke too much, yes its crowded but so is alberni inlet, barkley sound, campbell river or any other really popular destination. as for the fishing ive found it to be pretty good, certainley a heck of a lot better then the dead sea(salmon wise) around nanaimo.

Not dissing Sooke, Eagle Eyes. I too have found the fishing in Sooke to be very good. It's rare that I get skunked. And the fish are all decently sized. It's a tad frustrating though, you have to admit. Trap Shack, Beechy Head, Secretary, all are very busy. The regulars are mostly good about getting out of the way when you hook into a screamer however, it just takes one newbie in the mix to mess everything up. LOL Not saying newbies aren't allowed either, I was a newbie once.
I guess I was just trying to point out to SWC that the grass isn't always greener on the other side of the fence. Like you said, if you go to the popular, easy access, destinations, expect the crowds.

good post, i completely agree with what you say about SWVI and the grass not always being greener as well.

There's plenty o' green grass in Sooke area. Most guys are hali fishing now so salmon ground is not to crowded. Fog and crowds are not an issue until later in the year.
I believe SWC asked for the best place to fish "at this time of year"
Some good size fish seem to have arrived early this year.
As for "bottom fish"... Hali is hot right now.
You guys make me laugh !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! sooke is a great place to fish but that is my own personal view the boats all seem to move out of my way you know the old saying give respect get it in return

HiYa Cowboy,
Drop me an E if you're interested in the Bamfield area. There's some HOT fishing for springs right now, realistically close to the beach <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>
Cheers,
